That sounds like a lot of empty threats. MS wouldn't call because of two identical OSes, they aren't triangulating laptops by their wifi, he IS concerned about the laptop.

the MSFT thing sounded like BS to me too.
plus if he had a transponder (lojack for laptops?), it only works when the laptop is on? that sucks.
like someone said, he tried too hard to be intimidating.

OK... so thank you vood0g for posting that since I can't get the video to run, but for Christ's sake, if you're going to spend that time, at least make it fvcking grammatically correct. Right off the bat, the second sentence is either two or three complete sentences. WTF? I can barely read that!

i have a message for one person in this audience, i am sorry that the rest of you have to sit through this. as you know my computer was stolen in my last lecture the thief was apparently wanting to betray everyone's trust was after the exam....the thief was smart to not plug the computer in the campus network, but the thief was not smart enough to do three things:

1)he was not smart enough to immediately removed windows. i installed the same version of windows in an earlier computer and within 15 minutes the people in redmond washington were very interested to know why it was that same version of windows was being signalled to them from two different computers.
2&3)the thief also did not inactive either the wireless card or the transponder in that computer. within about an hour there was a signal from various places around campus. this allowed us to track exactly where that computer went and every time it was turned on.

i am not particularly concerned about the computer, but the thief who thought he was only stealing an exam cause presently, we think, probably still in possession of three different kinds of data, any one of which can send this man, this young boy, actually, to federal prison, not a good place for a young boy to be.

you are in possession of data from a hundred million dollar trial sponsored by the nih from which i am a consultant. ...this involves one of the largest companies on the planet. the nih investigates these things through the fbi, they have been identified, have been notified about this problem.

you are in possession of trade secrets from a fortune...company, the largest one in the country which i consult for. the federal trade communications is very interested in this, federal marshals are the people who handle that.

you are in possession of proprietary data from a pre-public company planning an ipo. the securities & exchange commission is very interested in this, and i dont even know what branch of law enforcement they use.

your academic career is about to come to an end. you are facing very serious charges with the probability of very serious time. at this point, there is very little that anybody can do for you. the one thing that you can do for yourself is to somehow prove that the integrity of the data which you possess has not been corrupted or copied. ironically, i am the only person on the planet that can come to your aid because i am the only person that can tell whether the data that was on that computer are still on that computer. you will have to find a way of hoping that if you have copied anything that you prove you have only one copy of whatever was made.

i am tied up all this afternoon, i am out of town all of next week. you have until 11:55 to return the computer and whatever copies you've made to my office as i am the only hope you got for staying out of deeper trouble than you are any student that i have ever known has ever been in.

i apologize for the rest of you to have to bring up this distasteful matter, but i will point out that we have a partial image of the person, we have two eyewitnesses, with the transponder data, we're going to get this person. thank you.

So was it just the professor talking or did they show the guy fessing up or anything?

Have you ever tried transcribing a speech? It's hard.

that was retarded. I mean... it's pretty obvious that guy is is trying to CYA. if he has all this 'info' the kid would already be arrested.

Yep, I think so also. If they had all this, they'd already have the guy - or they would soon and wouldn't jeopardize their case by spooking the kid with this bit of theatrics.

The bit about MS really cracks me up - How would they be installing his WinXP install on another machine with just an install to work with? And if the OS really does phone home and MS followed up on everyone running a hot copy, they'd have to have the biggest call center in the world to keep up.

And thanks for the transcription vood0g

I agree...the prof is full of sh!t just trying to flush the culprit out.

And if he had all that confidential data just plopped unencrypted on his laptop, he's a jackass, too.

I am truly thankful, however, that caffeine does not have the same phosphodiesterase as Viagra.

I can't believe all of you are falling for what is basically one giant bluff.

The minute he said this:

"he was not smart enough to immediately removed windows. i installed the same version of windows in an earlier computer and within 15 minutes the people in redmond washington were very interested to know why it was that same version of windows was being signalled to them from two different computers. "

I knew he was full of crap.

It's a bluff filled with empty threats. If he knew who it was he'd have had the cops pick the guy up already. He has no idea who it is and his lappy is long gone.

Its probably part bluff, part true. The kid is in a world of hurt. He probably will get caught eventually. Turning himself in now IS the best thing for him to do. If he waits and he gets caught he WILL be screwed.

no way the prof was telling the truth, if there was that much important info on that laptop, why would he even give the kid a chance to return it?... He'd just let the cops take the kid and retrieve the laptop.

because he wants it back now rather than in 3 weeks.

that's it, since a few of us can't view the video, someone do a play-by-play of what occured ?

just watch the damn thing, its worth it.
ok, but there's the issue of being unable to view the video.

dl rp you panzy

or at least that mock rp
you call me pansy, I call you illiterate (why am I even responding anymore?). I already stated in my first post in this thread that I have no problems with .rm/.ram files using mpc (real alternative) - it's just this file that doesn't seem to want to play for me. BTW, thanks vood0g for the transcription.

Yes, it's obviously a bluff.

But using psychology against ignorant undergrads to get the laptop back seems to me a very smart thing to do.

If he turns it in, at best his academic career is over. At worst, he will have a criminal record and may do time. If I were the kid I'd get rid of it and hope for the best - but then, I wouldn't have done something that stupid to begin with.

I doubt they have anything on him now - his best bet is to deep-6 the laptop and forget it ever happened. But I hope he continues his idiocy and gets busted.
