He's right, they have no chance of winning. They do have a chance of affecting the outcome though.

Well that's my point.

I was suggesting he research what exactly can happen, before dismissing the entire process as "broken".

Exactly, if it is Romney he could even win Utah. In a close race those EC votes are going to matter.

Except considering the holiday weekend is most certainly over with now and the only announcement made was Gary Johnson was chosen as the Libertarian candidate...

oh no he steals vote from someone...the process is still broken

from press coverage
to the delegate system

its all broken, all of it

im convinced that even if a 3rd party candidate won the popular vote he would not be elected because of the broken electoral college

US political system is like China/North Korea with two communist parties (you can call them factions) instead of one.

Or Kristal is full of it. Johnson isn't independent.

I think it's too late to get on most state's ballots.

Otherwise, this is the best year for a 3rd party/independent candidate ever.

I think the real game plan is to steal enough votes so that there is no victor in the elec college and the GOP house gets to pick the potus. Then the GOP establishment can get it's candidate without having to do that whole appeal to the electorate nonsense.

Yeah, and Paul Ryan says "Hi". But he can't stay and chat because he has Mitt Romney calling on line 1.

The media has a large role to play here. If they exclude everybody but Clinton and Trump from the debates I see little chance of any 3rd party/independent candidate earning enough EC votes to throw it over to the House of Reps.

To keep the race thematically consistent,, I'm hoping it's Bozo The Clown.
lol +1

it makes no difference how impressive a 3rd party candidate is. they have ZERO chance of ever winning because our system is broken
The point would not be to win, but rather to prevent any candidate from winning and thus allow the House of Representatives to select the next President. And if they do so, then people like me are finished with the GOP. We will become a one-party banana Republic way ahead of schedule.

I suspect it would have to be someone HUGE, and have large hands ...

It's still mostly winner take all electoral college. A 3rd party candidate will not take any electoral college votes away from the main candidates, can only tilt the balance between the main candidates.

Of course a 3rd party candidate could win electoral votes.

Perhaps you're thinking of primary elections?

The best one in modern times didn't win a single EC vote. (Perot). Some guy is going to come out of nowhere and win a state? That is fantasy. Only guy who could win a state (Utah) is Romney but it isn't him.

Teddy Roosevelt - running under the "Progressive Party" - did win more popular and electoral votes than the republican candidate in 1912, and he did so with an under-funded campaign. Granted that was a long time ago...
