Bill Bennett quote

On yesterday?s Salem radio broadcast of Bill Bennett's Morning in America, archconservative commentator Bill Bennett questioned the accuracy of a study suggesting that legal abortion has reduced the crime rate by reducing the number of unwanted children, and then said this:

BENNETT: Well, I don't think it is [accurate] either, I don't think it is either, because first of all, there is just too much that you don't know. But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky.

OMG :Q

It's hard for me to believe that someone with half a brain could say or think that.

he's a conservative, what do you expect.

AM radio talking heads spew nothing but hatred. How else would they get the morans to listen to them and keep their ratings up?

Hate to rain on you knee-jerk non-thinkers' parades, but his logic is sound - so sound it's basically a duh statement.

Want to reduce crime in a city? Kill everyone living there. Obviously, that will reduce crime, because there will be no one to commit crime.

Of course, there is the qualifying statement the folks above must've missed, "That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down."

It's an apparent fact that yes, legalization of abortion does drop crime rates, not only because abortion is no longer a crime, but as the study he was criticizing stated, there are fewer unwanted children whose parents are forced into illegal activity to support them, and fewer unwanted children growing up in homes with parents who are derelict in raising their children. He paints a false analogy. But what do you expect from a moral compass that points straight to the poker table?

White people don't commit crimes? Sure, he didn't say 'you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would drop to 0,' but why did he have to say BLACK babies?

I wonder if you intentionally posted this pun or if anyone else gets it.

Bill Bennet is an admitted compulsive gamber.

Maybe because per capita, blacks commit more crimes than whites? Or are you going to assert the simple statement of that fact is inherently racist?

This is true.. but I do wonder how much money whites steal from each other everyday -- have to include politicians and whit collar criminals like the Enrons and the World Coms and the Global Crossings and Milikens etc.. et al..
