I've seen some of the initial media on the 4th edition rules, and except for still sitting at your own computers it's being geared that way.

How is character rollup going to be handled? Do I rollup my own, tell you and you input it? You'll need to use Gatekeeper to alter values from what the game assigns, or the cheat Alt-8 (I think it's alt-8) and then scale back.

I'm available on weekends and starting after 5PM on the weekdays.

EDIT: I'm looking for work right now, so the day is allocated to interviews/searching on the web, but I CAN be available during those times, just not every day.

gameplan:

everyone make their characters in a single player game and play the first 20 seconds of the game (wait for the autosave).

when we go to multiplayer, you should be able to import that character from the saved game. takes all of 5 seconds, and we can go from there.

note: start a new game in Shadows of Amn (SOA), that way you have a level 7 character (SOA start) instead of 18 (ToB start).

how does everyone feel about friday night?

You're going to have to sync up mods/fixpacks, etc.

*At least* the latest ToB patch (everyone has ToB, right?) plus the latest G3 fixpack (supersedes Baldurdash) should be used... But which non-core components of the fixpack? And which, if any mods? Etc.

I'm not sure if fixpacks need to be synchronized, but its not a problem to get the game started with unsynchronized game files. I know I've got a bunch of crap installed (the main pack being the G3 fixpack). Me and Fenixgoon didn't have a problem when we played for a bit; hopefully there won't be some sort of strange error if our files clash at some event or something.

However, the entire game may simply be based off of the host's files, so ours don't matter... who knows? I know for a fact that I turned off the long SoA intro scene (the one where Irenicus "experiments" on you) for my game, but during the MP game I saw it.

As far as character creation goes, you can pre-generate a character file by going into the Multiplayer selection - it's one of the buttons. Make your character, export it and save it; when the MP game loads up, you can import your character. I believe characters generated in this way have exactly 89000 exp, which should be somewheres around levels 6-8 depending on the class (my thief was lv8, my cleric/mage was level 6/6).

I'm good for friday night, too.

I'm not a mod type guy, with maybe the exception of the one that lets you use rings/cloaks of protection with armor. That's the way it works in the pen and paper game, and BG2 can get pretty nasty at times.

oh yeah, is everyone ok with "insane" difficulty? AOE spells can damage party members, monsters do 2x damage, party members can be permanently killed.

i've always played on insane

I'd rather... not. Normal's fine, the next level of difficulty above normal is fine, but permanent character death? No thanks.

How do permanent character deaths work? On other difficulties, I thought when a character was petrified and then broken, that character was then permanently dead/gone... but if Insane means no ressurections, I'll pass.

Oh and guys, come chill out in the Ventrilo server sometime. More people is always good :)

I remember this pretty clearly. You got the saving throw bonus, but not the armor class bonus. I bitched about it, but the rule book was pretty clear. I guess it was because the probablity existed on a 1-20 scale and if you allows Rings of Prot to add to your armor, well, soon you'd be a -20 AC and nothing could hit you off the table.

I'm not too ungrateful for the new system(3.0-3.5). It adds flexibility, but it sill suffers from some shortcomings. Spell resistance doesn't work well enough.

Well I went and found my BG2 game pack, but guess I can't play now as I never even broke the seal on it yet   ;)

Ok kidding, for this rule set how is multi/dual class chars handled? The little reading I've done says that dual class wizards still can have a spec while multi can't (except for gnomes). Also it seems that with the games EXP limit (is that raised with the expansion installed?) that the last spell level can't be reached. I normally like to spec Illusionist as the Necromancy field of spells present in the computer games usually is lacking (hold dead raise dead and the way later finger of death seems the only worthwhile ones here and having not played the game yet I'm not sure if hold dead is of use).

perma death - your character cannot be resurrected (the icon will disappear). all we have to do is reload a saved game.

typically this happens when you fight dragons, giants, or get nailed by a trap. a 250dmg firebreath has perma-killed some of my party on several occasions :p

i thought dual/multi mages couldn't spec except for gnomes, who could *only* be illusionists. i'll have to double check though.

necromancy does have some good spells. vampiric touch lvl 3 is nice :)

That's... a lot of damage  I'm so spoiled, I barely ever died when I played. A few times when I was careless about traps... but those don't count

And you're right, you can't have a dual/multi specialist mage in BG2 unless you're a Gnome, in which case you can only be an illusionist. Last I checked, Necromancy has some decent spells - Vampiric Touch, Death Spell, Finger of Death, and Horrid Wilting (one of my fav spells) come to mind..

I was reading the pdf of the manual from sorceror.net and am pretty sure the section on wizards said something along the lines of "only single or dual class chars can specialize (exception multi class gnome illusionist)".

Vampiric touch is nice, but does have that fatalesque flaw in that you must be in range to touch the victim. One of the reasons I was thinking of dualing as a cleric, assuming I'm even partially remembering the correct way multi/dual class works.

clerics don't count for specialization, IIRC. i've never played a sorceror so i don't know if they can specialize or not, but i'm pretty sure that you need to be a pure mage for specialization.

at any rate, stoneskin + mirror image + fireshield + vampiric touch = a safe you and a hurting enemy :)
