Beyond Bankruptcy(TM).

I tried Beyond Meat once just out of curiosity. It's not terrible, but it's no replacement for real meat, and it's worse for the environment (way more processing and mining involved for all the chemicals etc) and it's also much worse for you nutritionally. If I'm going to cheat and eat processed food I rather just go to McDonald's or something.

Up there with - "Milk, it does a body good!", "Got milk?", and "the incredible edible egg!"

I eat beef critter, but I like to supplement it for various reasons. I'd miss beyond products. Hopefully someone else will buy them when the time comes.

I don't have a whole foods near me, do they have their own label?
I don't know - I don't even know where the nearest whole food might be. I'm fairly partial to New York Strip steaks.

Disclaimer: My only experience with Beyond meat "artificial meat" products is limited to Burger King's Impossible Whopper and while it wasn't terrible aside from a slightly odd texture I could barely tell the difference.

Frankly the rare times I eat beef I want actual beef not beef-like plant paste. 😉

Edit: Brain-lock lol .... its right there in the name no excuses.

Burger king is made by Impossible. It's the only thing I can eat from Burger King. I've also bought either Beyond or Impossible meat patties from Krogers and the one that gets a crispy crust when frying is my favorite. I don't buy them unless they are on sale though.

I hope Beyond can hang on until increasing beef prices make alternatives more attractive. Also a plant based meat if more appealing to me rather than something grown in a lab.

My goals with fake meat have more to due with ecology and animal welfare. I eat meat, but I think it's much less than the typical non vegetarian American. If everybody tried a little, it would equal a lot.
Yeah, red meat is particularly resource intensive - much more than most people realize. Plant based meats were a nice substitute and a way to make traditional meat dishes vegetarian.

Looks like meat's back on the menu, Boys!

-Yeah 'cept it's literally getting more expensive by the day.

I'm in a high COL area in California so stuff was always going to be expensive, but my Chicken has gone from $8.25 to $9.99 a pound within the last month or two and beef... Holy fuck we're looking at $22 a pound for basic shit like NY Strip and such.

Funny enough the one thing that gets me to work more fiber and veggies into my diet is pricey meat. I typically do 1.5lbs of meat for a family of 4, with a lot of legumes/cruciferous veggies/etc.

At $22 / lb, Id have a reason to cut back. Right now, NY Strip is about $16 / lb and I eat less than I want to.

Probably not, because Impossible and Beyond Meat spent considerable R&D to create their specific products.

But the squirrel claimed faux meat is worse for the environment than cattle. 🤣

I can't afford to live in the Bay Area, but you're seemingly buying the most expensive meat from a high-end grocer? :p

CoL is also bad here in L.A., but supermarkets are fairly competitive (thankfully Kroger's acquisition of Albertsons failed). El Super is a Hispanic grocery chain, and on Thursdays for the past month, they sell a 10 pound bag of chicken drumsticks for $5.70.
In the current sales ad, chicken leg quarters are 77c a pound but again you have to buy a 10 pound bag.

These prices are lower than the competition, but it's very cheap if you have the freezer space. Obviously boneless breast meat is going to be a lot more (typically $3/lb on sale).

(I don't disagree that beef is expensive, but maybe that's overall a good thing.) Stagflation FTW!

I like to cook ribeyes, I usually just get the choice ribeyes from Costco. They are still kinda pricey, like around $50 for a pack, but they are big and you get a lot of tasty meat. Usually one is about enough for 3 people for a meal, and I freeze the others.

I usually cook them in a pan with avocado oil, and add seasoning of course. I like Kinder's and Montreal blend.

Now that you mention it, I haven't gotten steak in awhile. Mostly because of the prices. I stick to the cheaper stuff like Blade. The real good stuff would go to waste anyway because I don't have a grill.

Chicken and Pork are still cheap tho.

If pork is cheap, why doesn't McDonald's offer the McRib more often? Go figure...

i'm not sure why you insist on calling it "plant-based meat". it's not meat. it's plant. And "plant-based plant" is redundant.

Anyway,

1. vegans are extremely annoying people who will reject any food for a number of reasons. just because it's "plant-based" doesn't mean it's up to their lunatic standards.

2. vegans will, realistically, just buy vegetables, and cook them. vegetables are good. vegetables are everywhere. And they are cheap.

3. normal people have been buying meat for centuries. we go to the same shop now, buy the same thing. it requires conscious effort to go buy not-meat.

4. the best not-meat isn't better, cheaper, or more convenient than meat. (it's probably worse, but even in a best case scenario, it's not better)

What that leaves you with is the occasional curious non-vegan that may, on a whim, try something that is new. Nowhere near the level of demand that you need to sustain even a traditional retail chain, much less one that has sunk such an enormous amount of money to become functional.

Oh and, yeah, tofu and several other meat-replacement foods have been available for 30+ years and they are far easier to buy, use and eat.

Fake meat to me is more about texture than flavor. For unprocessed meat substitutes, you're pretty much limited to mushrooms for something that approximates "meaty". Tofu is fine, and I like it, but I wouldn't describe it as "meaty". You can get within sniffing distance of meaty, but it's still well short.

Tofu and mushrooms are great, they just have specific places and are not 1:1 substitutes for red meat. I'm not going to make a tofu or mushroom burger, but a plant "meat" burger is a great substitute. Or using plant-based sausages in a pasta dish instead of real sausage.

One of my favorite fake meat products is "chicken" nuggets and patties. Gives me everything I want from chicken, minus the chicken. I can't even say I prefer one over the other for flavor/texture. It's something to put a bunch of hot sauce on and have a sandwich or finger food.
