Firearms and physics fail. Rock salt is only good at extremely close range, and then only to piss somebody off. Shotshells don't have a wide enough pattern to "cut a man in two" and you need to review basic thermodynamics if you think any firearm you can control would "throw him back several feet". The same pattern argument precludes your fantasy of hitting anything you "point in the general direction".Shotgun's tough to beat. With a little knowhow you can make your own gunpowder and load it with anything from gravel to rock salt. The gun itself can last forever and all you do is point it in the general direction. Up close it will cut a man in two or throw him back several feet.
Although they are illegal for civilians to own in many states (if not all), a pump action riot shot gun can hold 16 shells. If more people then that get within shotgun range of you there isn't a lot of hope for survival anyway.
