Shotgun's tough to beat. With a little knowhow you can make your own gunpowder and load it with anything from gravel to rock salt. The gun itself can last forever and all you do is point it in the general direction. Up close it will cut a man in two or throw him back several feet.
Although they are illegal for civilians to own in many states (if not all), a pump action riot shot gun can hold 16 shells. If more people then that get within shotgun range of you there isn't a lot of hope for survival anyway.
Firearms and physics fail. Rock salt is only good at extremely close range, and then only to piss somebody off. Shotshells don't have a wide enough pattern to "cut a man in two" and you need to review basic thermodynamics if you think any firearm you can control would "throw him back several feet". The same pattern argument precludes your fantasy of hitting anything you "point in the general direction".

And I dont know about any 16 round riot shotgun. I thought they were like 12 tops.
But then again I'm not a crazy survivalist or special forces wannabe.

Right now I'm leaning towards this:

I will always be amazed at what a cold grand will get you in terms of "home defense".

Health and fitness. If you're getting shot at, you're fucked.

And I dont know about any 16 round shotgun. You'd need several tubes side by side and have to load them manually.
Though, I dont see that as too big a problem.
IIRC, the streetsweeper is a twelve- or twenty-round repeating shotgun. While originally a "double-action revolver" style action, I believe the later versions had a pump actuator for the cylinder.

I bought my Ar-15 for this particular purpose. Short enough that you can carry and use it for close to medium range. It's a rifle so it's accurate enough to hunt with. High capacity 20-30 round mags are readily available. .223 caliber rounds don't weight a ton and would be effective for putting a man down or shooting game. The composite stock, grip and buffer tube makes it fairly light weight so it can be carried pretty easily.

Last I check, zombies don't congregate in jungles (I've never seen a zombie movies with jungle backdrop). I'm pretty sure I can build some tree house mazes and swinging on vines with a katana or two on my back.
I like this plan. Live in the banana trees with the chimps and such. You won't always be able to find ammo, but if you live in a banana tree, you'll never have to worry about food!

I'm going with the impenetrable shelter with enough food and water to last until most of the zombies rot into mounds of twitching goo.

Pick any gun/guns you like that shoot a common caliber so you can pick up ammo from the people you have to kill. Translated.....anything that shoots .223, 7.62X39, 9mm, .45ACP, or .308.

Shotgun.

1) Ammo is cheap (for when you're buying it now) and plentiful
2) The gun itself is simple to use & fix should you have to fix it
3) Well made shotguns have really solid butts so they're great weapons for hand to hand combat should you somehow run out of ammo

I don't get the popularity of the shotgun in zombie survival. It can carry less than 10 rounds unless you get into the riot shotguns, which may do 25 (?). In most movies, people get overrun because they can't shoot enough fast enough or they run out of ammo.

Give me a SAW, AK or any compact assault rifle/submachine gun with crates of ammo.

You forgot 12ga and 22LR but exactly.

My SHTF load out is basically a LMT piston gun, needs no cleaning, and also is Nickel Boron modded to need no lube with 360 rds of 5.56 TAP LE ammo. I can hit the road and not worry. I already have 4000 rds through it no cleaning no lube and not one FTF/FTE.

Basically all my survival gear is maintenance free. From batteryless scopes to flashlights to solar watches. If things are that bad you won't have time to be cleaning, hunting for batteries, fixing things or anything else but finding a safe place, keep warm and fed.

Shotguns shoot 16 .38 slugs at target every pull of trigger w/#1 buck. Inside 100 ft you're fucked with one shot if on receiving end.

Shotguns - can load bird shot to survive.

Shotguns can load slugs if you're lucky enough to find big game.

Basically shotgun is the best one gun solution one can have.

Hits em all. two legged predators and four legged alike. And even flying ones too.

Except for grizzly bears that would pretty much laugh at all shotgun rounds while they eat you.

Zombies I'll take pretty anything 5.56 NATO that takes M16 mags with a good sight mounted. One round to the head and they are out of the game.

I don't think a bear would laugh at a good slug?

Also take that out of context it makes for an awesome quote.

I don't think a grizzly would be laughing if you shot it in the face with a 12 gauge.

Are you kidding me? A sabot slug would rip him in half with over 4000 ftlbs of energy. It's more powerful than a 300 win mag which drops em dead all the time.

It's about 4x more energy than 44 mag which has taken down grizzly's

Another thing, unless you have the right ammo and lots of it that grizzly will eat you with a 5.56.

A bear will go for 100 yards or more after a perfect shot with a slug from a 12 gauge shotgun. If that bear is charging you, you're not likely to hit it until it's within 100 yards. And, if that bear is charging you, you're not likely to get that perfect shot. Shoot a charging bear in the head with a 12 gauge slug, and it's fairly likely to ricochet & not kill the bear.

HOWEVER, if people look at my 2nd link, you'll see that there are explosive grenade rounds for shotguns. The AA12 holds up to 32 shots (or more??) at a time, and another 32 shots can be put in within a couple seconds.
