Blown head gaskets/thin cylinder head deck surfaces

Narrow oil passages which contribute to a loss of oil pressure

Poorly designed timing tensioners

Thin wall exhaust manifolds which crack on a regular basis

That is a very broad spectrum there. Toyota makes many V6's.

3.4 liter V6
3.0 liter V6
3.3 liter V6
4.0 liter V6

Which ones are you talking about? We have a 3.0 liter V6 in our Highlander and it purrs like a kitten.

All of them NFS4, this is from my general experiance watching them come into the shop on a daily basis.

In comparison, Toyota's inline six which is based on the Chevy straight six has had only one major service bulliten, a leaky valve cover.

That's news to me, although we are talking about a sample of one Toyota truck from one family in one single geographical region.

Yes, but this doesn't count, because Toyota's are all perfect.

The Yamaha V8 is a piece of sh!t. Owners are suing Ford over it.

True, Ford is being sued over the V8 (Taurus SHO owners allege costly defect). The 3.4L V8 in the SHO was designed by Ford, but manufactured by Yamaha, but I believe Fiveohhh is referring to the 3.2L V6, which is entirely a Yamaha design and has no such lawsuits.

lots of info (and brand loyalty;) ) in this thread.
I live in the mountains anfd the roads get trashed from frost heaves/plows/salt.
I need a vehicle that can climb a steep grade and be excellent in the snow,
a warrior.I like the idea of a mid sized pick up, but i want to avoid a 4cyl as my 4runner had an anemic 2.4 and was a pig on the hills.:(

The 3L VQ is better!! :p (no really its smoother)

Back to topic: How about those new Dodge trucks? I seen them around lately.

And if you want Subaru, and you need a truck bed, look atthe Baja. Sure its ugly..but it has a bed plus full time AWD.

I drive a 1998 Chevy S-10 pickup with the 4.3 Liter V6. It is a great running and very reliable pickup. What is amazing is that with the big V6 I still get 20 mpg in the city and around 24 highway. Do get the extended cab instead of the regular cab. I've got the regular cab with the 7.75 ft long bed. It is great for halling things, but the interior is very small. When my wife and 5 year old daughter (in a car seat) go to HomeDepot or somewhere with me, it is a very snug fit. I really like this vehicle, but sadly I'm will probably sell it because it is not a family vehicle.

GM's 90 degree V6s are excellent engines. They were devolped off of V8s that have an extremely long track record. They produce a fairly large amount of torque, and given that you're looking at trucks, that's what you want.

Though don't forget to look at V8 Dakotas. They got a fairly large amount of punch in a good sized package. 230HP may not seem like alot, but 295Lb/ft made my mom who drives a Jeep Cherokee think my 4200Lb Dakota was light.

Subarus have never used a V-type of any motor. They use the horizontally-opposed or "flat" or "boxer" configuration for all their engines. Their only 6 cylinder at this time is the 3.0L H6 in the Legacy Outback models with a base price of $26,995. The 2.0L turbo H4 in the WRX produces a few more ponies with less weight (and the 2.5L in the STi produces a LOT more) than the larger H6, if not as smoothly. But then the boxer design is always smooth and balanced just so long as it has an even number of pistons (unlike the V design). edit: all their models are AWD and absolute champs in the snow if that is your primary concern.

Despite their occassional imperfections, I'm a big fan of Toyota trucks. My other car is a '93 Toyota Ext. Cab 4x4 with the 3.0L V6. It has a 125k miles on it and still drives like a champ, and it has had very few reliability problems (the starter went out at 85k, that's it). They also hold their resale value very well. The engine was serviced by Toyota at 58k miles under the head gasket TSB for that model year. Not everyone took theirs in, so maybe that made the difference for what Roger was talking about.
I have considered and test-driven the new Tacomas more than once, and they have their plusses and minuses. The engine is great. For a small truck V6, it's pretty much the best I've seen driving-wise. Revs smooth and easy (it actually has almost a "sporty" feel to it) and it provides excellent horsepower with just the right amount of torque (unlike the S-10 V6, where you can't, under any circumstances, start off in the rain without spinning the tires). The look and build quality of the Tacoma, IMO, are excellent. Negatives were that it still isn't a very good freeway cruiser unless you put a tonneau cover or canopy over the bed, the manual shifter is a bit notchy, and the cabin seems to get smaller every year.

The newer Ford Rangers are excellent trucks. A friend of mine recently got an FX4, and it's a good little 4x4. I will say this though... do NOT get the 3.0L V6. It's a gutless, lifeless turd. Get the 4.0L.

I've driven the S-10 (rented one a few years ago by chance), one of my brothers owns an S-10, and I really don't know how I feel about them. IMO, the 4.3L engine is powerful. TOO powerful. You can't start off without spinning the tires it seems. Otherwise seemed fine except for the hideous GM interior.

On V6's in general, they are grossly over-rated. Contrary to big marketing campaigns, they are not "smooth" nor necessarily powerful. They are among the most unstable and unbalanced of all engine configurations. Car companies like to use V6's because of their size and shape. They fit nicely right between the wheels. Otherwise, they'd never build the things.

Based on the Chevy straight 6? What does that mean exactly?

best based on longevity??
which model legacys have v6's?I wouldnt mind a wagon even...tho i cannot and will not afford a new subaru.(something maybe 2-5 years old depending on mileage, condition, etc.)

(1) On longevity, I'd have to go with the Tacoma. Toyota pickups are pretty much bullet-proof, they are of excellent quality, and their resale value is EXCELLENT (for the aforementioned reasons). You don't have high resale value like that for being a crap truck;)

(2) Subaru doesn't make a V6, they make a flat-6. You can get a flat-6 in the Legacy, but only in the $30,000+ models.

I would go with the Chevy 4.3 liter motor myself, If you drive that foreign crap where I live they would be a total rust bucket in about 5 years.
