Best turn based PC game?

Age of Wonders 2, Diciples 2? any others?

The only turn based games Ive played were on console...Final Fantasy Tactics....How do these games compare to the console turn based?

The Heroes of Might and Magic series is probably the most popular, or possibly the Civilization games; I myself found the Civ games a little dry while I love
all the HOMM games. Age of Wonders was pretty fun, I haven't tried AOW 2 yet. Fallout Tactics is another turn-based game which I enjoyed, for the gameplay but also for the atmosphere. I couldn't really compare any of them to Final Fantasy Tactics as I have never played it. If I was asked to pick a favorite I would probably say Heroes of Might and Magic 3. I have HOMM4 but havent played it enough to speak about it.

I second HOMM 3. Great game. But I had to cheat in EVERY SINGLE campaign mission in Armageddon's Blade.

HOMM 2 was great too.

Haven't tried HOMM 4 yet.

Let me add Master of Orion 2, because MOO 3 is due out soon! Woo-hoo!

And if you want to go back to 1995, X-COM: UFO Defense was a blast.

At present, I'd stay away from Heroes4 since it is incomplete and buggy. The Heroes3 full pack with all three Heroes3 games is the best deal at $20. There are playable demos for Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders 2, so you could try them out and decide. I think you can get them at Gamespot.

One of the most underrated games of all time has to be Jagged Alliance 2.

Turn based squad tactics game, kicking ass all over the place 🙂

I'v playd them all, and the best ones are these
Master of Orion 2
Master of Orion 1
Civ1
Civ2
Civ3
Alpha Centauri
Fallout 1 (not exactly "turn" based, the combat is turn based)
Fallout 2
Heroes is ok (read HOMM😛)

Yeah Babyy! 🙂
Seriously, a great successor to X-Com, and a much better take on squad-level combat than Fallout Tactics.

For example in FOT only a knockdown reduces your (or your opponent's) action points, but in JA2 bullet hits do too, as do stun and frag gernades. JA2 also has smoke and gas gernades, and gernade shockwaves can knock weapons out of people's hands.

I loved the civilization series. This one hasn't been mentioned, perhaps because it's not exactly a main stream game and a new version is coming soon (beta is currently publically released). VGA Planets , I really couldn't think of a more truly "turn based" game 😉 The developer is now, and has always been deeply involved in the community his game generates (ie personally answers emails). I just find that a big plus when I play a game. Hope that brings some more people to it!

Worms 2 and Worms Armageddon

You, my friend, have excellent taste. Also, don't forget Worms World Party. Between the three sequels, I wasted countless hours killing worms in inventive and hilarious ways.

Jagged Alliance is one that I always heard good things about but never got to try. www.gogamer.com has it for $10, maybe I'll pick it up. Is the expansion worth getting?

One of these days, Im hoping to find a place near me that sells the expansion, I've heard many good things about it, and really want it, but noone sells it 🙁

Sunner,
Dave Simmons--

I have been wanting the XCOM: UFO Defense experience since.....oh.....'95?

I'm now playing Fallout: Tactics, which sorta comes close, cept lousy equipment movement, trading, buying. And, the game itself just has gotten a bit tedious. XCOM just seemed to be so much smoother, without the tedium, ya know? So.....can you splain more about why I might like JA2? Or, a good web site?

and.....for turn-based recommendations, I'd rec HOMM 2 or HOMM 3, or, the older XCOM: UFO Defense.....all as mentioned previously.

HOMM is the greatest turn based game I've played. I've had loads of fun with it. Any of the sequels are great. I had the most fun with the original HOMM1 way back when though. I always liked the phoenix in HOMM1

That's my list right there too! 😀

Master of Orion (II then I)
Warlords II Deluxe ( I don't care for the newer warlords games, they limit you to too few types of units)
Empire Deluxe (If you just love strategy games, and can deal with no eye candy, this one is still very very good)
