Skee-Lo - I Wish

:music:I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller. I wish I had a girl and if I did I would call her.:music:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skee-Lo

Someone had fun with the Wiki apparently.

Skee-Lo currently spends his time working at the local foot locker repairing shoes and shoe laces while also spittin at the local county fairs around Los Angeles.

The Humpty Dance kicks ass. But wasn't that the 80s?

Released March 26, 1990

It barely made the cut... Don't know why, but I thought it was earlier, like 87-88 (not that I was listening to much rap at 5).

I think any discussion about stupid rap from the 90s has to include Puff Daddy. Yeah, so it's not silly like Skee-Lo or Digital Underground, but when your whole album is built on samples from top40 rock hits of the 80s, that's pretty fucking stupid right there.

ATLiens and Southernplayalistic are both better albums than Aquemini, and that's just sticking to Outkast. I could easily think of ten hip hop CDs better than Aquemini. In fact, just for a lark, let me try.

Nas - Illmatic
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
Common - Resurrection
Wu-Tang - Enter the 36 Chambers
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Slick Rick - The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
2Pac - Me Against the World
Ice Cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted
Aesop Rock - Labor Days
RJD2 - Deadringer
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Non-Prophets - Hope
Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein

There's much better stuff out there than Aquemini. Don't get me wrong, it's a great album, but it really seemed to mark a downturn for Outkast from their classic freshman and sophomore efforts.

Nice, I highlghted the ones I agree with (only half-highlighted Ice Cube, because I listened to it the other day and I don't think it really holds up very well, though the same could probably be said for Slick Rick).

I know I'm totally in the minority, but I've never really understood the fascination with 2Pac, Wu-tang, and Nas.

KT

Edit: I'd add

BDP - Criminal Minded & maybe even By All Means Necessary
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full
De La Soul - Potholes

That's not half as bad as Dre's verse: "Never let me slip cause if I slip then I'm slippin'"... WTF Dre, are your rhymes being ghost written by developmentally disabled kids?

I don't much care for Nas' later work, but Illmatic may be the best album ever. Everything just came together so well. The only weakness is One Time 4 Your Mind, and that song is still better than 90% of rap out there, but any weakness there is completely overshadowed by NY State of Mind, Halftime, and quite possibly the greatest hip-hop song ever, Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park). I still get chills every time I hear the opening bars on the brilliant track from DJ Premier... I need to go fetch my Zune and put on some hip-hop dammit!

I agree with your additions. I'm a big fan of De La Soul is Dead... I don't think I ever heard Potholes. When is that from?

Bah, I'm an idiot, I meant 3 Feet High and Rising. Potholes is just always the first song I think of when I think of De La. De La Soul is Dead is actually a phenomenal album as well, but 3 feet high cannot be topped.

Oh good, I was starting to feel ignorant. I actually have 3 Feet High and Rising, I probably should've caught that. Good album; De La Soul Is Dead is better though. :D

No no no, 3 feet high has Potholes, Buddy, Me Myself & I, Say No Go, Eye Know, Tread Water, and more. De La is Dead has a few classics (Saturday, Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa, Ring Ring Hey Hey, and Keepin' the Faith) but nowhere near as many as 3 feet high and it's even recognized as one of the best ever, particularly telling since it was released at a time when gangsta crap was dominant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Feet_High_and_Rising.
