I used to love the Shannara series by Terry Brooks.

I also enjoyed the The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

this is my fave... i also liked a bunch of the dragonriders of pern series.

I personally can't stand Brooks. I've tried a few of his series but could never get into them.

I seriously doubt that guy knows anything. Don't worry about it. :p

SPOILER

In Book Seven, Harry's testicles finally drop, and he bones Hermione.

The movie will be rated NC-17 :p

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Sword of Truth series. Or even the Wheel of Time series. They are really good. Granted, both respective authors are still writing the series, but they are excellent.

Someone beat you with Wheel of Time. It started to drag for me around book 4 or 5 so I gave up.

Ditto. When I reread Sword of Shannara after reading LotR, I was so pissed off at how much of a ripoff it was.

Dune, Rama, LOTR, will have to read the sequels to Ender's Game before I make a call on that

Add Book of the New Sun to the above list and disallow for the possibility that Ender's Game sequels turn the crappy first book into a good series and you have my list.

I thought Song of Ice and Fire was mediocre at best, although I only read the first book. Yes, I like judging a whole series from the first book.

Wheel of Time started off great but got worse with each book.

Do stephen ambrose war books count?

As for children's books, the original Pooh books by Milne are among my favorite books of any kind. I'll take them over harry potter any day. And twice on thursday.

I found LOTR to be pretty poorly written. Predictible, 1-dimensional characters that I couldn't give 2 sh1ts about. The story is good, of course, but the books are garbage. Just read Beowulf.

They were pretty influential though....As the D&D world wouldn't exist without them...if that's your thing ;)

The movies were much better though, and I'd say a great example of a successful adaptation (which means taking the material from a book and translating it into the necessary forms to make a film work). People cry over losing characters and plot points from books, but that's because they have no idea what it takes to write a movie. Unless they're willing to sit in the theater for 8 hours and snooze...

Of course, I read the books a few years back; and not when I was 12, as I was supposed too.....

At the time when I should have been reading LOTR, I was reading the Xanth novels. It was an unhealthy addiction. Pretty much garbage, but I read the hell out of those things.

Sword of Truth series is great, I can't wait for the last book. I am also a great fan of Anne McCaffery's Pern novels. I have read all of those since Middle School.

Back in school, I thought I would some day buy every Hardy Boys book and proudly put them on my bookshelf some day.

Sadly, my bookshelf is currently home to nothing but a truckload of CD-Rs.

Most of mine have already been posted but here are a few more.

WEB Griffin's various series...a very underrated author.
David Brin's various Uplift series.
Bourne series (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum) by Robert Ludlum

And if we throw into the mix where an author has a certain set of characters and just keeps writing about them:

Clive Cussler w/Dirk Pitt
Tom Clancy w/Jack Ryan (though it started going downhill)

I'm I really the only Erikson fan here? Man those books the most detailed and amazing series I have ever come across. I can't wait for the rest to come out.

The Lyonesse Triology; The Dying Earth series - Jack Vance
The Amber series - Roger Zelazny
The Majipoor Chronicles - Robert Silverberg
The Fafhrd & Grey Mouser series - Fritz Leiber
The Dresden Files - Jim Butcher (and not what you see on Sci Fi)
A Wizard of Earthsea Triology - Ursula K. LeGuin (anything after the third book is pure dreck and Sci Fi butchered the Trilogy)
Garrett P.I. series - Glenn Cook (a Private Investigator set in a fantasy world)

Culture series by Iain M. Banks
Uplift series by David Brin
Commonwealth series by Alan Dean Foster (I didn't really care for his Flinx series which takes place in the Commonwealth)
