Add Book of the New Sun to the above list and disallow for the possibility that Ender's Game sequels turn the crappy first book into a good series and you have my list.
I thought Song of Ice and Fire was mediocre at best, although I only read the first book. Yes, I like judging a whole series from the first book.
Wheel of Time started off great but got worse with each book.

I found LOTR to be pretty poorly written. Predictible, 1-dimensional characters that I couldn't give 2 sh1ts about. The story is good, of course, but the books are garbage. Just read Beowulf.
They were pretty influential though....As the D&D world wouldn't exist without them...if that's your thing 😉
The movies were much better though, and I'd say a great example of a successful adaptation (which means taking the material from a book and translating it into the necessary forms to make a film work). People cry over losing characters and plot points from books, but that's because they have no idea what it takes to write a movie. Unless they're willing to sit in the theater for 8 hours and snooze...
Of course, I read the books a few years back; and not when I was 12, as I was supposed too.....
At the time when I should have been reading LOTR, I was reading the Xanth novels. It was an unhealthy addiction. Pretty much garbage, but I read the hell out of those things.

Back in school, I thought I would some day buy every Hardy Boys book and proudly put them on my bookshelf some day.
