Those things are badass. do they make them anymore? I have never seen one out in the wild, and first discovered this amazing invention while watching some movie that was filmed in the 70s or earlier.

wtf are these no longer around? cost to manufacture?

presumably because all icecube trays are made in China and no one wants to give them another easy way to give us all lead poisoning?

They lasted longer(never broke), but plastic makes a better cube. Sometimes you'd lift the lever, and it would crush the ice. Not terrible, but not the ideal cube.

I don't make ice. It always tastes like freezer, and is more effort than it's worth. I keep my drinks chilled in the fridge, and if I want it extra cold, I put it in the freezer for a little while, and wait.

High quality usable and ingenious devices were long ago abandoned in favor of colorful plastic shit. Just look at the kitchen gadget section at Target for evidence.

My wife bought measuring cups at Target a while back and they're these bright green collapsible rubbery plastic things. They have several fold lines down the side of the cup that simply serve to make emptying the contents more difficult, not to mention more time consuming to wash because powdered goods that one might actually want to measure get into the crevices. I need to go buy an old fashioned set of metal measuring cups that simply do what they're supposed to.

Grease splatter shields also. The only thing at Target was this over-engineered piece of crap that looked like a really wide, flat colander for $20. I had to venture into Walmart, never an enjoyable time for me, to find the old fashioned screen kind that just work. Oh, and a pair of them was $6.

Clean your freezer or something? I know what you're talking about. My freezer doesn't do that and thus my cubes taste fine.

yeah, I hear that.

I don't mind the silicon-based devices, though, as they tend to make cleaning a breeze. i think we have the same measuring cups--assuming they are silicon. for this, I would prefer metal, as you're not cooking things in them, so cleaning shouldn't be any more difficult than with silicon.

Its probably because having your hands stick to the metal is really annoying. My grandparents had them I remember getting ice was always an adventure. I wonder if I'll lose any skin today.
 
Is there a disorder or brain impairment that renders a person unable to twist their hands, but only turn both hands in the same direction? If so, that may be the problem expressed by the OP in this thread.

TridenT probably has shitty trays, was at my friends this weekend. She has super shitty trays, I managed to crack one last summer, and 2 nights ago I kept twisting and twisting. Until about 8 ice cubes flew everywhere

They were cheap and at some shit store around here.

I am not saying my trays are good.
 
I have an ice machine on my freezer door, no need for ice trays, just as all civilized people have. The water passes through a filter and the ice falls in a ice catcher I can either scoop up cubes from by hand or have them drop into my glass from a lever on the door. Right next to that is the ice cold water dispenser.

i have that in my fridge. after having it 3 years no there is no way in hell i would go back to doing it by hand.

having the ice/water in the door is very nice. i have it hooked up ot my RO system.
 
pellet ice is the only kind worth using IMHO, it's vastly superior to ice from a tray or from a fridge. The local burger joint has a ice maker that makes it, so I take empty 10lb bags and pay them to fill it up. Crushed ice from a fridge is especially bad. I'd buy a fridge that had a built in pellet ice maker in a heart beat.

That is pretty good. I like the crushed ice you get out. It seems to have gotten rare over the last couple decades, but it's always super special when a restaurant has it.

I guess it makes me an ice snob lol, before having it I thought ice was ice. But that shit has a quality about it that makes me go out of my way to eat at places that have it.
