What is even more galling is that if it had landed flat on its face rather than on the corner, it would have probably been ok.

Aigo - have you had an experience of the Asus P6T Deluxe or Gigabyte GA-X58-UD3R?
If so, what did you think of it/them?

The asus if your not a hardcore overclocker.

The gigabyte UD5 not UD3 if you are.

Aigo has said that the UD5 is a good over-clocker. I'm also looking at how much it would cost to buy the CPU in the US and have it shipped to the UK. I'm presume the 1 month warranty you usually get for new purchases won't matter if it is covered by the 3-year Intel warranty.

Aigo,

I've also had a look at the Gigabyte GA-EX58-EXTREME. The only difference I could see in the spec between this and the UD5 is that the Extreme has 'Hybrid Silent Pipe 2', and the UD5 has 'Copper Heat pipe / Alumi-heat sink connecting SB, NB, VRM and rear panel' for thermal cooling. They are about the same price:
GA-EX58-Extreme
GA-EX58-UD5 for £215.00 inc V.A.T.

Edit: Do know if one is better than the other?

There might be new X58 mobo's coming out soon.

You can always run the memory at a different Mhz and looser timing with lower volts to within the mobo's specified max and save on buying new ram then get the ram you want when you get some money. This way it'll ease the $$$ burden.

This MB:
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 for £215.00 inc V.A.T.

And more likely a I7 920 for £230.00 inc V.A.T.

Or I7 940 for £445.00 or £400.00 inc V.A.T. on fleabay.

I make that about £610 when shipping is included on top.

I've been shopping on the 'Net for 3.5hrs and couldn't get better prices than that stated above.

What do you guy's think of my choices?

I'd say see what people are getting with the 920's overclocked on a H20 system and if that suits you go with a 920 i7 I hear 4Ghz requires 1.4vcore That is too high for me as I decreased my old FX60s overclockability when I over-volted it. Did 3Ghz and some change but I tried for more and about a half year later, 2.9 was my best. Could of been the mobo but then again, I didn't trouble shoot for different parts like a new mobo. I'd like to shoot for 4Ghz my self but that might not be till the road for me and the i7 920 - way end of the road.

I personally noticed a difference with lower timings when I was running my Q9300 and this DDR3 1600 I dropped the ratio to 1:1 and was running 6.6.6.18 and it was noticeably faster. But you can buy that ram and run it 1:1 and try the same thing. You might see/feel an improvement.

Thanks for the reply BTRY. I've going to be doing some over-time for work - I'm going to negotiate my fee with the boss; I expect I'll get paid over £400 for it, so I may be able to buy the I7 940 after all.

I will probably try and sell my 2x2GB OCZ Platinum DIMMS on fleabay. They are only about 2 months old and I know both DIMMs work. I will be happy if I get £100.00 for them. I'll include the original invoice with the DIMMS, so the OCZ lifetime warranty may be applicable.

Edit: Sorry BTRY, I posted the above whilst you posted. I'm in two minds now about both the RAM and CPU.

I'm thinking if I buy the I7 920, will I be disappointed that I didn't buy the 940 (I know, my e-peen is probably coming in to play now).

You are right that the RAM can be replaced at any time. May be I should not buy it now, since it will only drop in price.

I have heard that all the x58 do pretty good, comes down to price and features basically. they are also coming out with ne boards soon and more extreme boards as the Evga I mentioned earlier.

I have shipped to the UK in the past and shipping wasnt too terribly bad. considering the cost of euro to usd is crazy right now, so it may be quite a bit cheaper to buy here and have it shipped to uk.

you probably could have bought the 920 for less than $300 shipped to your door.
I know 230 euro is more than $300usd

Im just curious as to what other mobos are coming out.

not sure if this is clear but was based more to Daw123

Get the i7 940, you won't be sorry! I would of like to have one to, trust me, but the last CPU i bought for over 500 USD was this Q9650 :D so,... once in a while is ok, but not within a year or two of one another, and I have to give Props to Infrnl cause if he didn't link me that 229$ deal at MicroCenter, I probably would of never bought my i7 920 :D Cheers! Sell the Ram off also. Get what you are shooting for man, its always gratifying to you personally :)

lol; hopefully you wont make me feel bad for making you jump on the deal if you dont get what you want out of it, lol

I think i would rather have a 940 as well; puts you in the middle (nice sweet spot). If I can find a used one, I might bite. I spent 400 on my 9550 and look at it now; $300, lol. Im with BTRY; I usually only spend $200ish on a cpu, butsometimes you have to splurge a little more

It's seems that I don't need to be Aigo'd - I'm talking myself in to buying the 940.

If you guys spot a good deal on the 940, please can you let me know.

It's looks as if the exchange rate from $ to £ at the moment is 1.5:1.

the only difference between a UD5 and a extreme is the stock heat sink. But your watercooling so why do you need an upgraded sink?

The big difference between a UD3 and a UD5 is the thicker PCB board. Which means the UD5 is a heck of a lot more durable.

That is why i recomend the UD5.

@ Infrnl - dude, don't worry about it, totally. It makes me happy just sitting there :D believe me. Again I have to give thanks.

Honestly, I don't think those will go down in price although Anand did say there is a price drop coming soon. Maybe within the next month probably due to AMD's competitive Phenom II - I'd guess the Yorkfields and below will drop in price but not the i7's Shoot, my Q9650 is still above 500 and that was the sweet spot so if you guys see a deal on an i7, jump on it like I did!

Will keep an eye out though. Whats a good price as in USD for a 940 for you daw?

I like being Aigo'd...I think, I have expensive taste anyways, Aigo just makes it easier on going the expensive route, lol

LOL, it's make it easier on the wallet when you know you have bought something decent (although usually expensive ;))

Thanks, that clarified that - I was checking both specs, scratching my head, as to what was different to warrant some shops charging £40 more for the Extreme.

Exact match! 1.8v 7.7.7.21 1x2Gb of DDR3 1600 - it was good back when they first came out, now you can probably find a lower vdimm 7.7.7. latency chip but the review that i read convinced me of these sticks - very good overclockers; we'll see how they do in an i7 setup; 2/3rds there! All I need is a mobo :D

I bought them cause they were good overclockers and the added extra benefit was that they are made in the USA - A Colorado based company so $$$ back into the economy :)

SuperTalent is made in Colorado?

I know Mushkin is made in Colorado; or originated in Colorado. Not sure If anything has changed.

Im glad you found your ram; now what mobo? before you know it you will nbe playing I7! woo hoo:D:beer:

PM's sent! Good Luck!

My Bad, they are headquartered in San Jose CA

Not sure yet on the mobo, i need to chill out with the $$$ spending and its a good time because I'd like to see a better board come out for it. Plus, I've heard something about a hydro chip coming out that will be an option besides the X-58 chip. I think there are threads about it here somewhere...

OK, off to work! in this freezing weather, brrr

Sorry guys for not responding earlier.

I would be looking at under £400 (which is about $500) when you factor in the exchange rate at $1.50:£1.00 and then import tax at 18.5%.

Do you guys know if they do an OEM version of the 940?

I've also realised that if I overclock it then the warranty would be void any way, so having a warranty isn't that important?

So I decided to go with a 15k SCSI drive again over my Raptors. The Raptors are ok, but this old Maxtor Atlas 36g still wows me so on to modding my case.

The Fujitsu 300g 15k 68pin SCSI will be in my gaming case (bought it for 236$ OEM btw) so I wanted the best mounting cage/bracket. And from my personal experience I've gathered the rubber mounting grommets really quiet down the drive and puts less of a rigid stress on the drive. SSD drives aren't just ready yet. My current cage at the bottom of the case isn't made with rubber grommets. So, I had to figure out a way to mount a cage I drilled out from a 5-1/4 Lian Li HD cooler mount.

Old cage on left, desired one on right.
Drilled out 1/4 inch holes and installed grommets.
Odd spot for a HD cage.
Rubber mounted cage & Rubber mounted drive!
I'm sure you were wondering about the clearance.

I've already done a mach test with my old P5Q3 which has the same layout as my Maximus II and the wiring (24pin) will fit. Just got to see if the RAM will have clearance. Which I think it should or all this is for nothing. LOL

Do you think I can get it cooler with my low rpm fans and those 90's
(high40's at 71*f ambients at 4Ghz on my quad ~ 1.31v)

on a supreme yes.

No 90's b4 inlet on an injector class block.
