so basically you tried to return an item that you decided you didn't like for a full cash refund that best buy now has to sell at a discounted price because its open. How can you not see the flaw in this.

Best buy sux for most things we all already know that. It is in printing about the restock fee on camera radar detectors, etc.

reading policies before buying FTW.

I recently purchased a radar detector ($300 Escort 8500x50) from a NE San Antonio Best Buy. Placed it in car and could hardly hear the audible alerts when traveling at speed on the interstate. Took it back to Best Buy and wanted a refund because in my opinion, the unit is defective-it's not enough. I didn't want an exchange. The store had their technician (a term I'll use lightly) test it and in less than one minute, returned and said nothing was wrong with it. I argued that listening to it in a little room in the store is completely different than on the highway. They offered to take it back after deducting a $45 (15%) restocking fee. What a bunch of crap if you ask me. Company customer service in MN wasn't any more helpful either. The policy is 15% restocking fee. The f**king thing is defective and Best Buy won't have it!
I walked out of the store with the detector!
Anyone else have stories to slam Best Buy with? I know I'm not stepping foot in another store again!

Suppose you went in there with a unit that actually didn't function. They try to give you a replacement and you say, "Nah, since this one broke so quickly, I wouldn't trust another, but thanks, I'll just take my money back."

Are you suggesting that he break the radar detector so that he gets his money back?

My bad. This is exactly the kind of situation that forces BestBuy to HAVE a restocking fee - people would rather use Best Buy as a free rental service than research a product before they buy it. And you better believe those same people would raise hell if they were sold an open box item as new.

Best Buy is the only store I know of that has a big 10ft by 10ft sign with their return policy printed on it so big George Burns could read it.

an alive George Burns? or a dead George Burns?

Either. The sign is fricking huge!

Are you suggesting he'd get all of his money back, if the unit actually didn't function?

I don't know what either of you are suggesting, but even if the unit he received was completely non-functional he'd only get an exchange.

Best Buy is convenient if there are deals that you just can't beat. I bought some CD's from them and a few CD players. Basically, if you have some spare cash and want something nice right away, you go to Best Buy. Otherwise, find a different store.

Sears has consumer-friendly policies. They actually pricematch to websites (they add in the shipping cost from the website of course)

What I don't understand is how someone who is computer-literate enough to post on ATOT can be illiterate enough that they cannot read the HUGE return policy sign at the front of every Best Buy.

I've never bought a radar detector, but I've seen that sign so many times I even know there is a 15% restocking fee on radar detectors-- unless defective.

Hell-- they even print it on your receipt as well, too if I'm not mistaken.

There are plenty of reasons to hate Best Buy, but the OP's lack of reading skills isn't one of them.

Dude, you can't complain when in HUGE letters on the wall of the store it says "RESTOCKING FEE FOR RADAR DETECTORS".

It works the way it's designed. Your car is just too loud.

THE BEST BUY INSURANCE FOR THEIR PRODUCTS SUCK TOO!! No offense to those that may work there. But I have heard about a few friends of mine that had their ipod minis go out. Then they took them in and got replacements or free upgrades. I guess because the minis arn't being sold/made anymoreand also I think all ipods have a standard 1-yr warranty. Well my mini went out all of a sudden. I took it to best buy (yes I had the $50 insurance i got with it) and they said they had to send it to Apple. I told them to make sure it is kept safe so there isn't any scratches. My ipod comes back and has scratches all along the top and Apple couldn't even fixed it. Then I had to fork out all the extra money for either a nano or video ipod. They refused to match the 4gb nano for my 4gb mini due to the price. Now I think that is poor service. The manager was too scared to come out and talk to use too while we were there. Yes, now bestbuy gets less of my service.

Just my two cents.

I've paid for insurance on one item from BB, my 50" TV. Already paid for itself.

The item was not defective, you just failed to research your product before you got it and did not like the way it performed. Thats your fault, not theirs. Every electronics store has a restocking fee. If you wanted to exchange it for a better model they would have allowed it, but you arent. Therefore you are going to pay a restocking fee on a unit you simply do not like, not a defective unit.

If it truly was defective you could also exchange it for another item of the same model. But Im sure you know it will do the same thing. Its not just good enough for you. Doesn't mean its defective though. Don't like it? Do your research next time.

Best buy only has a restocking fee if you buy a notebook computer, camcorder, digital camera or radar detector. Looks like you screwed yourself by buying any one of those at bestbuy. Circuity City has a much bigger list: Digital cameras, camcorders, desktop PCs, notebook PCs, monitors, printers, scanners, projectors, PDAs, mobile video, GPS and radar detectors. Except in hawaii, where they don't charge a restocking fee. Thats oddly nice. Anyone know why?

Probably because there is a state law in Hawaii restricting retailers from charging a restocking fee???
