Best Buy Return Policy Sucks

I recently purchased a radar detector ($300 Escort 8500x50) from a NE San Antonio Best Buy. Placed it in car and could hardly hear the audible alerts when traveling at speed on the interstate. Took it back to Best Buy and wanted a refund because in my opinion, the unit is defective-it's not enough. I didn't want an exchange. The store had their technician (a term I'll use lightly) test it and in less than one minute, returned and said nothing was wrong with it. I argued that listening to it in a little room in the store is completely different than on the highway. They offered to take it back after deducting a $45 (15%) restocking fee. What a bunch of crap if you ask me. Company customer service in MN wasn't any more helpful either. The policy is 15% restocking fee. The f**king thing is defective and Best Buy won't have it!
I walked out of the store with the detector!
Anyone else have stories to slam Best Buy with? I know I'm not stepping foot in another store again!

I think the restocking fee is only on certain items because of people buying stuff, like cameras for a vacation and then returning them. Ive had no problems with their return policies, ive returned a game console and a televion that I didnt put back in the box with no restocking fee.

If you believe it to be defective, and you were willing to pay $300 for it in the first place, why would you not accept an exchange?

From their website

Restocking Fee
Unless defective, a restocking fee of 15% will be charged on opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPS/navigation and in-car video systems. Unless defective, a restocking fee of 25% will be charged on special order products, including appliances.

Precisely what I was thinking.

BTW, I have this exact radar detecter and its more then audible enough. Either your unit truly was defective or you couldn't locate the volume control

take the exchange , and then return the unopened detector at another store for store credit.

Some stores will open the 2nd item before you leave, so you can't return it unopened.

Main reason. Since between the time I purchased it and tried to return it, other radar detector users I've talked to have actually had the same problem (low volume) with the Escort. I've owned a Beltronics and a Uniden. Both of them had excellent volume levels. I decided to try the Escort because of the recent results of the 2005 radar detector Shoot-Out last summer. I figured another Escort would probably have the same problem with low volume, so I decided to not exchange it. I should have gone with the reliable Beltronics!

Exactly! When I was standing in line, some guy was exchanging a PSP for another one and the clerk opened the new box before handing the new item back to the owner.

Damn, that sucks. If people tried that at my store, we'd be out of business.

Best Buy is the only store I know of that has a big 10ft by 10ft sign with their return policy printed on it so big George Burns could read it.

If it's defective, you should have gotten a working unit. It's not defective, it just didn't meet your expectations.

(you haven't answered yet why you wouldn't take an exchange)

How the hell is it defective?????? It works. Yes, you're too deaf to hear it, doesn't mean the product is defective.

Boxxcar answered your question at 5:08 PM. Hey Boxxcar, why don't you return it to the manufacturer?
