In order. Not meant to take away from Wilt's greatness as he revolutionized the game and holds a number of records.

1. Michael Jordan
2. Wilt Chamberlain
3. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird (tie)
4. Elgin Baylor
5. Oscar Robertson
6. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
7. Bill Russell
8. Julius Erving

Honorable mention: Bob Cousy, Jerry West, Isiah Thomas, Hakeem Olajuwan, Shaquille Oneal, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Moses Malone, Artis Gilmore, James Worthy.

Geez! I posted Shaq 8 hours ago and no flamers!? I thought people would be all over me for that one. I know I would be if somebody would have posted that... I hate that guy so much but wanted to get a rise out of you guys...anyway, put my vote in for "The Stilt". Heh, I remember doing a research report on him in the fourth grade!!

One has to admit that Jordan, Dr.J, Wilt Chamberlain, Karrem were all great players,

but don't forget about the first of them all "Pistol" Pete Maravich....

For me it has to be MJ. You knew he was going to beat you -- you just didn't know how.
I loved to watch him! Been bored watching the pros since. I haven't found a "replacement" hero yet.
BTW aren't the Bulls pathetic now.

WILT was just there at the right time. the game was still adapting to the differnt style and sizes that people bring to the game. thus wilts influence brought the 3 sec and lane violations. hes prob the reason we even have a paint. But stick like shaq in that era, it would have created similar if not the exact same outcomes.

if anyone mentions Hakeem...then you have to say Ewing.to be honest id rather have Ewing than Shaq. I used to live in NYC:)

Definately Jordan. Jordan thouroughly dominated basketball in modern times. Enough said.

2nd place is a tough one, but surely Russell has to be seriously considered for that spot.

WHAT!!!

One lousy mention for Karl Malone??

SCREW YOU GUYS!

What would be really cool is if there was some way that all these great players (in their prime) could be brought together. Then we'd really see who's the best.

Jordan can lick my crack!

I am sure if I was older, I might think differently, but since I am not, Michael Jordan is clearly the greatest basketball player of all time. Wilt's stats baffle me, such as 100 pts. (obviously), 55 boards (!) and averaging 50 pints a game in a season. But he had his weaknesses (FT shooting, anyone?), and was a freak physical specimen in his time.

MJ was a complete player... obviously, he couldn't be stopped on the offensive end with his ankle-breaking moves, quickness, vision, hangtime and that deadly J, and he was a perennial selection to the all-defensive team.
But the key factor for me is clutch. MJ was the fiercest and most intense competitor I have ever seen in any sport, and the way he always found another level for the big games was his most amazing attribute.

I think both men changed the game, but to me Jordan is the greatest player ever, and I'm not saying that because Nike told me to. :)

another thing, did they have the loser takes ball or jump ball during wilts 100 points. im almost sure its loser takes ball. but my point is players of that time sculpted the game. comparing is very hard.

Jordan and Magic...

I'm glad Magic is pushing Kobe to get some triple doubles...it'll definitely help the team so much more. :)

I'm only 20 but I'd have to agree with the "elders";) and say Wilt's the man. The fact that the "elders" have been around to see both Wilt and Jordan play, and still say Wilt is the greatest has a lot of merit. It's arguable that if Jordan hadn't retired that first time that he might have started to match some of Wilt's numbers, but I'm skeptical of that. I've never seen Wilt play but I think what was miraculous about Jordan was his consistency...and consistency at doing things well. He consistently played well, consistently got his team out of major jams and consistently led them to playoffs and victories. Talk about bang for you buck...

Having never seen Wilt play though (other than in 5 second tidbits tied together into 2 minute tributes by NBC) I think I've been deprived.
