Best band that only had one album ... ?

Page 5 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
Sex Pistols only had one album that they recorded. Although The Great Rock N Roll Swindle is a great album, its a collection of unreleased songs and different versions of songs from Nevermind the Bollocks album....as stated by Hankerton.

Oasis - my favorite band of all time.....most people in the U.S. don't know but they have plenty of other great songs besides the songs from Whats the Story Morning Glory.

minor threat. technically they had a few different releases, but they were mostly just the same rereleased songs.

edit for bad grammar.

Layla
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #719 in Music

Blind Faith
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #3,383 in Music

Why are you so obsessed with sales rank and chart positions ?

Just like in the McCartney/Harrison thread...

We're talking about personal tastes and opinions.
I think Derek & the Dominoes have a great album, but I prefer
Blind Faith. Derek and the Dominoes are pretty much popular for
one song (Layla)...which is one of my favorites off the album
along with Bell Bottom Blues, but if Blind Faith would have had a
single hit as big, I'm sure their album would be as popular.
However, when considering the complete album material, I, personally, think
Blind Faith has a better record.

Well, obviously it is a matter of taste.

However, sales is grounded and quantifiable.
In fact, it is almost the only thing that anchores the discussion.

But, I agree with you 99%.
Basically it is worth discussing between Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes, and i have compared them.
None of the other albums in the thread are even worth adressing.

because it was a side project and it sure as hell sounded like it.

Uhh, both were "side projects." TOTD kind of "evolved" into Pearl Jam. Sure both were different and "experimental," but they were damn good.

Both bands have been in rotation for several months on my winamp playlist, and they're still better than the emo/punk/whining suburbanite that passes for rock music these days. More bands need to create an original the way Mad Season and Temple of the Dog did.

This thread is pissing me off. TOTD released their album well after Pearl Jam and Soundgarden released albums (Ten and A-Sides). TOTD did NOT evolve into Pearl Jam.

Sex Pistols was probably the most influencial for only having one album. (Although personally, not a huge fan, just stating the fact).

Also, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, Candlebox, Hootie, the Toadies, and Adema all had more then one album.

And personally, Mad Season is my favorite for only having one album.

TOTD - April 1991
PJ - Ten - August 1991
And with 4/5 members of PJ working on TOTD, I call that evolving.

No one said Chumbawamba though, and I'm a little disappointed. I'm pretty sure they didn't have any other albums than Tubthumping.

Yeah, there's a fvcking reason for that.

:disgust:

I can't think of any great one-album bands. Most of the bands mentioned in this thread had other albums that were forgotten (check allmusic.com).

Temple of the Dog

who later became pearl jam after their lead singer died....if you can, find 'stargazer' I assume you already know it though if you know temple of the dog

I believe you are thinking of Mother Love Bone whose singer Andy Wood died - for whom Temple of The Dog was a tribute. The genesis of Mother Love Bone was Ament and Gossard (later of Pearl Jam fame) from Green River, BTW - a fantastic band.

Does this qualify? Temple of the Dog wasn't really a group, but a name given to a tribute project.

"Temple of the Dog was a one-album project conceived in 1990. The purpose of Temple of the Dog was to pay tribute to the late Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990"

my picks:

Probot - Probot

# 1 person recommended SUICIDE instead of Very Best of [IMPORT]

And the customer review is pure genius. Here's an excerpt:
"Yeah- this album is great. Quite possible the best album ever made. It is in the top 100,000 bestselling albums of all time in the United States, behind Michael Jackson's Thriller, (reviewer has to leave momentarily so he can DANCE), while in Europe he was personally responsible for the fall of Communism, so he occupies a demi-god status over here. According to David himself he is going to take a new career direction with religious fundamentalism being his next target for liberation. Us free market fundamentalists in the music academy are doing all we can do appease him, as this man is a major player in global politics thanks to his majestic talking car."

Soundgarden has released albums as early as 1988! Even though they don't get the credit for it they were really the first Seattle grunge band that started the scene. They were around long before Nirvana began receiving credit for it.

People in he US know the other songs. Live Forever was a huge hit in the US, but they only picked up the song, not the band.

That said: Blur was better😉

That said: Blur and Oasis are past there prime now.

That said: Graham Coxon is tops.

Pearl Jam + Soundgarden. You can't go wrong.

I don?t mind stealing bread

But I can?t feed on the powerless
When my cup?s already overfilled

Nirvana recorded their first demo tape in January of 1988.

You people who said Oasis are high or something. Definitely Maybe was almost as good an album as Morning glory. Rock n Roll Star, Live Forever, and Supersonic were all great songs off Definitley maybe.

Derek and the Dominos were so many light years better than any of the other bands mentioned in this thread that my mind can barely comprehend such magnitude.

and i think mentioning bands that are currently working is kind of cheating. though it doesn't matter. derek and the dominoes were still better.

i mean "layla" alone was a song that was so powerful that eric clapton used it to steal george harrison's wife! when you're writing a song that steals the wife of one of history's all time great songwriters, you know you're writing a fvcking amazing song.
