Believing in god or in "a god" depends on how it is you believe.
I know a hell of a lot of devoted christians who dread in horror the very thought of dying and death. That makes absolutely no sense to me. If a christian believes in a god then why should a christian fear death? And if they fear death, then do they really believe in god or in "a god" in the first place?
For most christians I don't think they really know what the hell they believe in. I do know that most of them definitely believe in Donald Trump, isn't that a kick in the ass? Believing in Donald Trump and preaching Donald Trump from the pulpit?
I suppose that Trump christians feel Donald Trump delivered to them the overturning of Roe vs wade. A pretty hefty price to pay for alliance to an antichrist, and I ask was it worth it?

There might have been reason to believe in a god back when people were on their own and had no access to medical treatment or to doctors. As in the 1800's. 1700's. But today pills and medication are more popular than gods or a god. And when most christians fear death as they do today, then what is the point of believing in an afterlife or a god? What is it their god is suppose to do for them in times of need?
Like Jesus said hanging on the cross... forgive them, they're assholes.

Well let me just confess that I believe that the bible is 100% the word of God, however, one must differentiate between a Christian and the pharisees, Sadducees and the scribes which most religious people are. Even Jesus had to deal with the religitards in his day as they were the most numerous lot of people perpetrating religion and control over the people using religion while having no clue who God is.

They were out in public hunting a prostitute to stone her to death when he confronted them about their hypocrisy and made them leave her alone. Religion today is big on this behavior in public with their open displays of it plus they are the ones trying to force their views on you and me while protesting anyone or thing trying to do the same to them.

The bible clearly states that Christians are the "minority" in that few people will ever find it even though the majority claim to be it. Jesus' words were straight is the gate and narrow is the path that leadeth unto life and few there be that find it. If I'm honest I can't stand to be around church people as they are the most judgemental bunch you will ever find even though the bible tells you not to do it.

What does it even mean to be "word of God?" And what does it even mean to "believe?" Or question belief? It's all chemical processes in people's brains interacting with each other and external stimuli through time and space.
Also, don't you think it's a little strange that an omnipotent being decided to only plant ideas for the bible in select few human heads and let them pass it along through millennia (while collecting money and distorting meaning through translations) instead of just planting them verbatim directly in human heads? Seems a pretty inefficient and lossy way to get ideas across if you are an omnipotent being with far better options.

Holy crap.

Situation is much worse than I assumed. 81% of US citizens believe in magic marvel super heroes. That is like. Fucked up. And a situation ripe for exploitation.

I think you're behind the times, it was already exploited to get Trump elected. Of all the dumb shit evangelicals have gone for in the past accepting Trump as send by god has to be number one.

The numbers will keep dropping. Adults doing a very poor job of LARPing Fantasy anthologies, isn't very convincing anymore.

My son shared with me a memory from one of his high school STEM courses. The instructor was discussing with them, some of the latest advancements in our understanding of evolutionary biology. One of the students made some fantastical remark concerning how the Adventures of Jebus and friends contradicts it. It evidently went down about as well as the Say the line Bart meme. He states that among those he knows even acknowledging being a member of a particular sect, all but a couple say they only do it because of their families, and don't take it seriously, or believe the stories in the bible. /anecdotes.

Everyone is free to decide for themselves but most church people are conditioned to accept only what their pastors tell them. Religious classical conditioning is a dangerous thing.

that’s just their BS excuse when voting for a total shit bag like trump. Coincidentally, this “Gods will” crap is used to justify all sorts of shitty behaviors

81% is a lot higher than I thought.
May have something to do with the way the question was presented to them. A craftily designed poll would be apt to have a lesser result than 81%. ;)

For instance, you could ask "do you think God is protecting you from having road accidents?"

Or, "do you think God is looking after your finances and your security from harm?"

Or, "is God actively interfering in human events?"

Or, "will God make sure our environment isn't deteriorating?"

Just asking "do you believe in God" will get a knee jerk reaction from people because they don't want to declare "no" to that question. It doesn't say much about their experience and thinking.

We should try to schedule fun secular activities during church time and invite would be church goers. I feel like a lot of people just go out of nothing better to do, kind of like baseball.

I think a lot of non church goers find their own things to do on sundays. I know for me it’s usually leg day, because it’s time consuming. Others I know it’s similar

How can you have so little going on in your life that you'd rather go to a church related event rather than the billions of possible activities one can experience?

I mean, if you live in an area with interesting stuff to do, yes, but a lot of people live in the boonies with nothing to do except church. But I think if there were group outdoor activities, we could help break the cycle of brainwashing.

I find it quite amusing that so many of the folk here who do not believe in God seem so upset about the fact that some people say they do. What could that possibly be all about? I wonder if they maybe even feel entitled to molest children who believe in Santa Clause. Talk about triggered...............

I live in the boonies with nothing but church. There's still a billion things to do. Why does everything have to be group outdoor activities? Can you not just go experience nature alone? No books, movies, TV shows, games, etc? Just group church engagements?

But some people think they'll just go to church in the morning and do those things later. It would be good to schedule some fun group activities exactly during church time to impose a more clear opportunity cost to going to church.

... Or just don't go to church? Why the obligation? Nobody cares but people predisposed to judgment.

I do think a lot of people go to church for a community. It is a good way to meet people. Too bad you have to listen to a bunch of bullshit, for it though.

Oh I am sure it goes deeper than that, but yes, just because there are a lot of people who call themselves Christians who in my opinion are deluded and just because there are a lot of mentally ill people in this country who use guns to overcome, just as the so called religious do imagining they own the one true faith, all manner of feelings of inadequacy, doesn’t mean I, myself, need to become a raging anti Christian or anti gun mental case.

I am quite certain it isn’t these other people, so much inferior to me, that are the real problem. Now fuck off. I am too busy right now to deal with small potatoes like you. I am putting together two suicide vests. One I am going to wear to a church nearby and the other to a local gun store. You don’t even know how to do ‘nuts’ right.

yea, I’m not nuts, a real zinger there. No worries though, just be at peace with your humanity in guns, and Jesus.

The need to deride someone who does not have your issues, say calling them ‘having humanity’ as a put down is textbook nuts right up there with denial they have issues. Trying to beat people into your form of insanity by belittlement is how we got crazy in the first place. Try to relax a bit. You’ll be less reactive. Smell the roses. Give a Christian your shirt.

This is more of you enlightenment projection talking.

A bit of lashing out as well, as being presented with your own humanity in different facets is something that doesn’t fit you arrogant enlightened professed persona.
