By the way, stay outa bear country! Don't forget your laptop!

I own plenty of guns, I've gone hunting a few times and I've seen bears in the wild. I've never shot a bear or had the need to shoot a bear but I have done a fair amount of research and reading on what is and is not a suitable sidearm to carry in bear country and what is a good load for those weapons.

I KNOW what I'm talking about.

I also own plenty of guns, and have been hunting plenty of times - I do not consider myself a hunter though. I have never shot a bear either. I live IN the mountains of TN - the WILD as you call it, is home to me. I don't worry about bears when I go camping, I worry about them in my yard!

Still too much reading but I think you're confusing my "sidearm" backup pistol comment with the primary hunting round.

Not at all. The author of that article covers bear hunting calibers and defense weapons too.

I agree with you that .44 Magnum and possibly, with the right load, a 10mm is a suitable backup pistol. I sure as hell wouldn't hunt bear with a .44 Magnum handgun...although there are some hearty individuals who do hunt with handguns, I don't know if they hunt bear with them though. I just know that I wouldn't.

Yet you think a 1911 Colt pistol loaded with .45 ACP hollow points is a suitable bear defense gun?

Bears must not get very big in TN.

Obviously, no sane person would go HUNT a bear with a shotgun...

Yeah, that was a grizzly bear and he was using slugs and he was barely able to stop it even though he hit it multiple times.

00 buckshot would be extremely ineffective and at close range you'd be lucky to get off one shot before the bear was on you.

But at that close range one shot would do it, more so if the bear were mear inches from the barrol. :)

Whatever you can do to "prove me wrong" eh? Hah. This can go on all day.

These are all "what ifs" which of course have no relation to what might actually happen in the wild.

Hey, I've gone hunting in the Sequoias and camped/hiked there many times for many days at a time.

There are tens of thousands of square miles of untamed wild here in California with some of the most rugged territory in the country.

But I'm sure your forests are impressive too...

Nononono. You need a bazaooka or that bear is going to EAT YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN.

Okay genius. Get back to me when you actually confront a bear with your 100 year old military spec handgun...assuming you live to tell about it.

I'm done with this thread.

You get back to me when you shoot a bear (any bear since we haven't even talked size really) with any .45 ACP hand gun several times in key locations and the bear DOESN'T die.

Like I said, this can go on and on and on. You just have some fixation on being "right" and "correcting" people when in reality there is no right or wrong answer here.

So get back to me, will ya?

Bear attacks. Most people are pulled from their tents while sleeping and killed.

HAHAHA-This nitwit was begging to be eaten by bears...

Timothy Treadwell-Found by their pilot, dead and most of their bodies consumed at Kaflia Bay, Katmai National Park, Alaska on October 6, 2003. Treadwell was world-famous for his books and documentaries on living with wild bears in Alaska. State Troopers investigating the incident recovered an audiotape of the attack. Only a few days before, Treadwell filmed himself with the bear that killed him in the background, while commenting that it was a bear just like this one---older, struggling to bulk up for the winter--that posed the most threat to humans. The two were killed on the last night before their pickup, after spending several months in the Alaskan bush.

I hunted a wild boar with a bow and arrow, dumbest thing I have done in my entire life.

I take it that your hunt didn't go as planned. Those things are surprisingly quick.

I've posted links to back up my position. I've even suggested how you might carry a 1911 in bear country and make it a somewhat effective sidearm. All you've done is blast me and make assumptions about me based on where I live.

It was like the buffalo in Dances with Wolves. I shot it in the neck, and still ran a few yards with the arrow sticking out and all. It came to a screeching halt right in front of me.
Ugly damn animal too.

I haven't assumed anything, and my blasts only came after your pretenious tone of Mr. Know It All.

I thought you were done here.

Glad to hear you are ok. You are lucky he did not get his tusks into your flesh, they can disembowel a man in seconds. Would you advise carrying a large caliber handgun the next time? How about an extra pair of shorts lol....

Still waiting for anything you can find that says a 230 grain .45 ACP hollowpoint shot from a semi-auto handgun is adequate for bear defense.

So you are saying that a multiple head shots with .45 ACP would not kill a bear?

I just want to be clear on what you are claiming.

I am saying that relying on a .45 ACP semi-auto as defense against bear is foolish...especially large bear like a grizzly which can weigh up to 1500lbs. The shape and thickness of a large bear's skull have been known to actually deflect bullets. Multiple shots in vital areas would kill it eventually but it would likely kill you before it succumbed to its injuries.

You'd probably be better off with pepper spray to try to deter the bear rather than shooting it with a handgun of that caliber.
