I remember when the 360 first came out. Games looked like shit. I remember the uproar over Madden because it was a straight port of the original version. It looked like ass. Then Forza came out with aliasing so bad you'd cut yourself.

But devs got really good at eeking out performance. Look at Black Ops 2 and compare it to the early days or even Modern Warfare. It's night and day. The question is will we see the same gains over time in the next generation. There seem to be major concerns over the sluggish CPUs.

with the past history of every console in the history of consoles putting out better looking games as the consoles live span went on, i'm going to take an educated guess and say yes, we will see these gains.

This.

Everyone keeps comparing the new setup to modern computers but that seems pointless. We should be comparing the new hardware to the previous gen hardware and looking at those advantages.

If you think the gap between the new hardware and previous gen hardware is big, then I think it is safe to assume big improvements in the long run.

No, they will not get any better! This is the pinnacle!

Everyone knows that the developers are able to take advantage of 100% of the machine's potential processing power the day the console is launched. There will never be any progression.

Remember the last cross gen launch game? And then compare it to BF3 at the end of the gen. I think we're off to a pretty good start, regardless of what system you play it on.

Not trying to be Debby Downer here but most of the difference last gen was a side effect of the ballooning video game budgets and not magical optimizations. If that game had non-muddy textures it'll look much better and run on the same hardware.

Also, I'm not sure if it's just me but people seem to be remembering the games they've played recently extremely fondly while at the same time looking at screenshots of older games on a PC and imagining we've come very far.

Like for example TLoU; people keep saying this game looks good on Reddit, but I've played it and it looked like utter garbage to me.

So I'm sorry, but I don't think this is the same situation. This generation, we're going to have one massive leap in the first year, and it'll level out. Except for maybe the Xbone, but only cause it's garbage.

Were you playing the same game I was ? The last of us looked pretty good for a game on the ps3 near the end of it's lifecycle. But the game focused more on the story than graphics. What other game looked better ?

i'm just going to dismiss anyones opinion who says something like The Last of Us looks like "utter garbage". i'll stick to the opinion of the other 99.9% of people who think it looks great and was one of the best games this generation. surely 99.9% of people can't be wrong but the .1% can be.

he must think that every single game on ps3 and 360 look like "Utter garbage" then since TLOU is one of the best looking games this gen.

that said, the game did show the console's age though because it was pushing it to the limit.

Any game from the past 12 years with settings so everything doesn't do the pixel wiggle when you walk maybe?

I never experienced this. The world and surroundings looked great as well as the character models at times. Unless you are sitting 8 inches from your tv I don't know what the "pixel wiggle " has anything to do with detracting from the visuals of the game.

Then it was just me then. I played on a small LCD TV, so yeah I was sitting pretty close. My PS3 won't connect to my monitor (Crossover 2560x1440), and I don't have a larger TV of my own (and don't need one, TBH).

The cutscenes looked okay, but the game looked nothing like the screenshots to me; the environment was jaggy and certain textures were MSPaint-level bad.

Any time I've played on really small screens I've also had to sit really close which would be why games could look pretty gnarly because everything is up on your face at that point. It's true of bigger tv's too. Sit normal distance from your 32-42" tv and everything is fine ...move up close because the controller needs to be connected to charge and you can say it's not as sharp any more.

The question is will we see the same gains over time in the next generation.

Yes, because one of the biggest problems with last gen was memory. 512MB total was a huge issue because it meant compromising on texture resolution and performance loss from swap. The benefits won't always be apparent on screen, but where this next gen will excel will be open world games such as GTA where lots of things need to be kept in memory. Tricks like using excessive mip mapping or motion blur (GTAIV, Killzone 2) to help keep frame rates up won't be necessary so there will be an immediate increase in graphics fidelity all things being equal.

There will be more consistancy with performance and over time and developers will optimize memory usage as well as shader technology, which directly affects image quality. Release games usually only use baseline tech because they are literally developing blind as the consoles aren't usually even finalized for the better part of game development. Optimizing for a moving target is hard.

The PS4 and XB1 won't be able to compete with PC games in overall technology and raw GPU capabilities, but the gap will definintely be reduced. Overall the new machines are capable if not almost boring. The good news is that whichever console you get, the focus is back on the games and less about hardware. I don't care what people say about the hardware differences between the PS4 and XB1, both consoles contain plenty of power to carry to do the things I described above, but neither will grow legs until a year or two down the road though the PS4 is in arguably a much better position at Day 1.

While the 99.9% aren't always right, in this case it is likely mathematically provable.

While I still need to beat the game, it was pretty obvious how much detail they put in that game in the one day I rented it.

I think what matters most here is that the PS4 is going to find a much larger stride later on in its life cycle. There is much more to it than simply 50% more Shaders. It has an even more pronounced advantage in other areas related to GPGPU.

This gap everyone is seeing is simply not going to close in over this generation, it's going to get worse. Everyone saying they look the same is delusional, they don't. It's almost exactly 50% better without taking into consideration other Caveats and maturity of the platform.

Go rent it again, absolutely must finish it. The way it just keeps you on your toes the whole time is great. I actually wished it was longer now. I was hurrying up to finish my games to put in time to watchdogs but guess that's not gonna happen.

I will likely buy it to support the devs, but I'm not paying $45. I'll wait til it hits $30 or less.

Yea it's one of those games where you play once and that's about it. I mean you can run through it on other modes again just for fun but the enjoyment is in the story.

64 players now. I too am not thrilled with the release games. But I wasn't either when 360 and ps3 came out.

I dunno how people can say this. I am super excited about killer instinct, forza 5, killzone, even knack. Do you guys just play really niche games or hype machine games like GTA and last of us? I am not trying to be sarcastic or make a snide remark I genuinely want to know what type of gamer you are because it will help me understand your viewpoint better.

killer instinct is pretty niche.

forza and killzone are sequels.

im personally sick of modern shooters, there are too many and they come out too often. same with forza and race sims in general.

and knack definitely does not look like anything special, and it's a new ip so i can see why people wouldn't be hype about it. it looks fun but not $400 fun (to me of course).

Lame. What games DO you buy at full price then and support devs from day one?

It is never the first of a series. Once you get me hooked to a series, I'll pre-order the next one.

I think the last one I pre-ordered was SC:HoTS. Either that or GoW:J. And I just yesterday pre-ordered the new Zelda bundle.

I kicked myself for not pre-ordering D3. Took forever to find a CE.

This is also a common trend for pc gamers. They all want more games and to see better ports but waiting for steam sales to buy games doesn't help the devs see that they aren't wasting their time.

I like all type of games. Just wasn't looking forward to knack as much as watchdogs or say gta v. I never played killzone, and I'm not a fan of racing or sports games except maybe some madden or fifa once in a while.

Killzone looks like your standard shooter with different weapons and better visuals, different character abilities I suppose. I'll pick it up at target if I can make that sale.

Knack to me looks fun because I liked jack and dexter. I like games with stories like the last of us and tomb raider the most.

I just mean there is a lot of variety. Sports games that aren't direct ports, racing games, shooters, platformers, action games. There is a pretty big list even with the couple of delays announced. I understand not everyone will like everything of course. I just think there is something for everyone on launch day with these consoles, but apparently I'm wrong.

There are also the free to play games that look pretty cool as well like that ww2 air combat game. For a free game it looks pretty nice.

So games that are stand alone one off titles that are from well established developers with over a years worth of video and info isn't worthy?

It doesn't help that I thought Uncharted sucked outside of the story and it is the same devs. I only played one Uncharted (2) because the controls were terrible, even though I really liked the story.

Plus it helps me spread the love.

I don't hound you for "wasting" your money, you should get off your horses here.
