Thats very true. Before when we were playing I decided to stop because of that. Even if you manage to effictively bomb targets and take of control points, there really isn't any point. As soon as you die all is lost. The game really becomes much more fun and strategic when victory (or control of a point) doesn't hinge on a single player.

Its funny how many people fight over the planes. There have been times where I've seen over 4 people just sitting on the carrier waiting for a plane to appear. And half the time they shoot the plane if they aren't the one to get in.

Today I played quite a bit on the public EA servers and there are quite a few people serious about playing the game. They don't fight over the damn planes, they understand tactics a bit. And they don't TK.

Oh god the TK'ers. One server I was on, had this guy who threw a grenade into the landing craft right at the start of the game. Killed three or four people that way. I lived only because I was in the driver seat. Got to the point where if I saw him near me, I'd drop everything and kill him.

But all in all, its a good game. Hopefully they have improved on it for the real release.

yeah if we could get 16 of us ATers to play it'd be worth it but otherwise its just practice a certain skill you want to practice

I HATE the Tkers... I'm looking forward to when servers have admin's on 24/7

Buck up there fella. I for real will play soon. The girlfriend just doesn't understand my gaming habit, so when she's here, it's no game time for me.

As for those talking about buying the game, I will be first in line. If you guys (neomits for sure) want to have some kind of Anandtech team or something, let's talk. Some of you guys are pretty good, and I wouldn't mind being associated with you.

It's bedtime for me. We'll definitely play this weekend.

EDIT: About the jackasses who shoot the planes when they can't get there first and just seemingly kill teammates over petty stuff, you all know where you need to go. Damn that burns me up when I see someone get beat to a plane, then blow it up because of this. If I ever see any of you do this while we are playing, prepare to get promptly run over by a jeep. Good day :D

I think I've decided to wait until someone I know buys the game and tests it out before I put down money on a product that I can't return without a fight. If it really went gold so soon after the MP demo release, I can't believe they've fixed all the problems with it, and I'm NOT going to buy a game KNOWING that it requires patching for serious issues just to reach a basic level of playability. If the MP demo was actually a much earlier build of the game and not so recent before going gold, that's fine, except I doubt that's what happened (and there'd be little point to that).

As for TKing, I refuse to play on any server that has friendly fire turned on. That at least makes TKers have to work for their kicks. If I find a server has one person who likes to blow people up on his own team, I make sure I play on the other team. If I can't avoid them, I leave the server. People that get their rocks off from preventing other people having fun just go in the category of People Who Are F'd In the Head and Don't Deserve My Time. The only way I'd play on a FF server is if it was with people I knew and could reasonably trust not to TK on purpose (I'm 50/50 on whether I think it's a good "realism" feature or whether it detracts too much due to accidental killings).

One "strategy" that royally gets my panties in a bunch is parking the carrier on the edge of the map. Nobody wants to be the one having to protect the carriers since they can't get many kills that way, but that is what the game is intended for, strategy, not frag-festing. Unfortunately I don't think the game will be played as a strategy game, it will be just another first person shooter fragfest, as is already seen by the fact that nobody will defend flag points, they only go to try to kill more enemies. (Of course, the limited number of players makes real strategy nearly impossible. And realistically, 4 AA guns that can only hit a plane when used by a perfect shooter makes the carrier essentially undefended. Not that anybody seems to remember that the destroyer's entire reason for existing is to defend the carrier.)

Lord Evermore I've got an even worse story about the carrier. I almost always play Axis, I think its more challenging and thus more fun. So the only spawn points after I died was on the carrier and I choose scout. One thing I noticed was the carrier getting hammered by Allie airplanes so I get on the AA guns (nice trick of being able to auto switch between them all). In the process of shooting down some planes, the Allie pilots parachute into the water near the carrier and board it. They of course start killing all the idiots nading themselves waiting for planes. After being killed by the guy (didn't realize he was on the carrier until too late), I show up as assault and hunt him down. They guy had been on the carrier for like 10 minutes and no one cared!!!!

It seems that 50% of the people just want to fly the planes. No one wants to defend anything.

But I've gotten pretty partial at sniping. Its very hard and you have to be patient. But damn, if someone stops moving for more than a second, I've got them.

As far as the TKing aspects go, I agree with pretty much everything you have to say. However, I don't think the fact that all most people want to do is rack up kills should be a surprise. In every last "team oriented game" out there, most people are simply score wh0res. I always laugh when I see gaming sites refer to counter-strike as team oriented. Give me a break....everyone just runs around trying to get kills and any team play occurs strictly by coincidence. Battlefield 1942 is no different. The exception to this rule is lan play or playing online with people you know. Thats exactly what I intend to do.

I've always avoided "team" games because I know nobody's interested in playing as a team, and I think it's unrealistic anyway with current game technology. Voice chat comes close, but it's still not perfect and of course not everyone can or wants to use it, so you have to coordinate the teams for that to be truly useful.

But I do run into people in BF1942 who are interested in team play to some extent. The ones that always stop to pick up a teammate when they go by in a vehicle, or heal others when the medic or repair vehicles as an engineer even when it's not THEIR machine. Total coordination isn't necessarily required, but at least don't sit around doing NOTHING but looking out for your own score and interfering with the people that are trying to play a true game. If you aren't going to help, at least stay out of the way. I just truly cannot understand the mind frame required to be a pure TKer or to fight over planes and blow them up if you don't get one; I can't comprehend the type of person that derives enjoyment from preventing others from having fun. I admit to being a total jerk, but at least I don't actively and consciously try to bring people down. If I'm that miserable, I just keep to myself.

So... anyone playing tonight? I know it's Monday... but I'll already having withdraw!

I found some good public servers with mindfull play yesterday. Of course you are not save from some buttmunch joining, but all in all it was good. If you play a team that plays a little teamwork... boy you get picked apart quick. I think the Clans will rule this game more then any other.
Just think... a Team that has dedicated pilots that know how to take off and acctually bomb an enemy unit and/or town!
Thanks that have a support person with it. That can take care of damage and the mad grenade trowers.
A team that lands 10-12 people at the same spot including a medic and a scout to spot for atillery!

This game has a lot of potential and will define the simple fragger running arround doing his thing from the real team players really quickly. Simply put... it won't be much fun for a single guy doing his thing, finding a coordinated team playing against him.

It will most likly become a lot like the Gamevoice crowd... serious channels will all be password protected. That will eliminate the kids that just scream arround.

So anyone need someone that is willing to man the Flak on a Carrier and not to cheap to play Mechanic for round after round?!

Heh, I usually play as a scout and would have no problem sighting for someone at an artilery piece. But getting that kind of coordination just doesn't seem possible on a public server. That and I think very few people realize that its possible.

But I'll still play scout and snipe people at the North Base from the South Base. So much fun just randomly killing people like that. Just wish the damn gun was a bit more powerful.

I'm up for playing tonight and I think I might be able to find us a private server we can join

And I think that if we get enough ATers that buy the game we could have a TeamAnandtech for BF1942.... we'll have to see but already a lot of ppl have shown interest

I'm definately playing tonite for at least 2hrs. But I hate the way the server selection is on this thing. I wish it were more like RTCW or CS. It's hard to find a decent ping, 20-32player server thats available.

Is there a way to filter out servers?

If you use Gamespy Arcade you can filter out stuff... and there is a patch coming with All Seeing Eye support that is another program that lets you filter and search for servers

also if you click the category it'll organzie it by that

but for tonight..We'll play here

The game needs some work. I understand balance, but there needs to be a little realism involved too. I mean a dead-on bazooka shot should do a little more than stun a guy. Heck, it should take out everything short of a tank with one shot.

Anyone need a pilot? I can actually land the damn planes.

The bazooka can take out a tank in one shot. Just has to be dead on from the rear.

i'm sick of all the damned pilots. WTF, why not try helping your team? Last night, neomits was kicking butt as a pilot, he was the only one we needed. The axis forces had at one point 4 planes in the air. At this point, they were at 80 tickets, while allies had over 160. You would think that they would try to salvage a win rather than fly like idiots. I jumped in a plane once, as a gunner and the freaking pilot didnt even make it off the runway before crashing with me still in it. :|

This is why I don't pilot, I can't get the damn thing off the landing strip. Plus, I find it more enjoyable to get in a transport boat and sneak up on the allies from the back of the main base.

BTW, there is a Los Angeles public server that has some very good team-based players who frequent it. Check it out sometimes.
