i'm sick of all the damned pilots. WTF, why not try helping your team? Last night, neomits was kicking butt as a pilot, he was the only one we needed. The axis forces had at one point 4 planes in the air. At this point, they were at 80 tickets, while allies had over 160. You would think that they would try to salvage a win rather than fly like idiots. I jumped in a plane once, as a gunner and the freaking pilot didnt even make it off the runway before crashing with me still in it. :|

This is why I don't pilot, I can't get the damn thing off the landing strip. Plus, I find it more enjoyable to get in a transport boat and sneak up on the allies from the back of the main base.

BTW, there is a Los Angeles public server that has some very good team-based players who frequent it. Check it out sometimes.

last night was my last day playing BF1942. My broadband connection is now gone at home 🙁. It's dialup for awhile for me.

Someone on the Axis side was an amazing pilot! Strafing the airfield constantly. One time he actually plowed through an Allied guy with his wing. Never crashed either.

one of them was, the rest were horrible. The good one got me in the AA gun by the airfield once.

I think of myself as a pretty good pilot... but on some servers the hustle arround the Airfield is just silly. So I play as Engenieer and take care of my Tank buddys.... that is if they understand that the guy with the wrench acctually trys to fix them and not get in the way! 🙁

I also played with the Artillerie support. If I can find a spotter that doesn't give me a pice of water or a lonly road as a target... but acctually the Airfield or a Enemy base... Watch out... INCOMMING! I got that down now.

So what Server will the fun be tonight? The FF Servers are all but a joke now. I played on 3 different ones last night... One guy was making a great spot out of sriving the ships out of the map... while others grenaded their own team at spanning. Let's hope that that will go away with a full retail Version of the Game and admind Servers.

I had a blast playing this thing last nite. Finally was able to get in on a big game. We must have fought easily 1 1/2hrs over the central control point in a huge see-saw battle. I think I played for like 3hrs total.

If they can get the damage details worked out, and balance out some of the weapons, this will be fantastic. I hate firring a tank round at the feet of a soldier just to have him survive. Granted if it's an armor peircing round (by default?) and not HE, it's posible, but the second one should take him out.

Also, i've fired 4 bazooka rounds into tanks that did'nt blow-up, even with 2 rounds at the rear. And grenades have too much power. They seem to have about a 30ft kill radius and can take out tanks. Sorry, no way.

Here are overhead views of all the maps that will be in the full game. Pretty darn sweet.

All the maps

The Omaha Beach is said to be the best D-day level ever out of any games

and a sweet thing also is in the level Operation Market Garden the allies have the option of starting out by parachuting in 😀!!!

Nice 😀. They need to release another map. And I agree about all of the TKers and the ones who do nothing but stand around waiting for a plane to show up. That happened tonight and was pissing me off.

Is it just me, or is the server software extremely crappy? After setting it, it doesn't seem that I can go back in and change any settings. And it doesn't even seem to remember settings after quit. Am I missing something here?

There is a SAVE icon you need to click anytime you make a change.

I put up a site with the Game Maps.

See them here: Battlefield 1942

Now... yesterday I acctually got pretty lucky and played on a Server where people acctually team played.
Landing was mostly done with 1-2 full Landing craft. Hardly anyone was waiting for a Plane to spawn and someone acctually did some spotting for Atillerie and it was firing at the spot too! Bombing runs where efficient and the ships where defended... what a refreshing style of play that was!

Looking at some of these maps... can you imagine a map like Market Garden with a team of Tank, Engineer, Infantry support an APC to heal and restock AMMO (You knew that if you sit in the back of the APC you get healed and restocked... right?!). It will be VERY VERY hard for the other team if they won't work together!

Some of those maps look like they will be kick ass. I personally like the looks of the city maps. Hopefully the urban warfare will be well done.

Regarding the APC. You don't have to sit in the back to get reloaded on ammo, only for health do you have to do that. I've drivien a tank by it a few times and the tanks ammo gets reloaded automatically.

The ARS server that neomits talks about has decent team play. Landing craft go out with 3-4 people at the start. Airplanes are used sparingly, rather than having large groups waiting for them. Some decent coordination with attacks. Scouting works okay, but there aren't enough people to get it to work right. Thats about the only problem with the ARS server, it only has like 16 people on it at most. 8 a side just doesn't quite work.

Whats especially funny, is that I get a ping in the 90's on the ARS server but less problems than the 30's ping I get at the EA servers.

Just figured I would let you guys know that EBGames.com is now taking pre-orders. If you pre-order, you get the game for $44.95, free shipping, and a mail-in $10 gift card. Not too bad. I would definitely do it if they included the gift card with the shipment.

Here's the server info again for new people visting just the end of the thread

most of us will be playing here and its a lot of fun. I'm usually in around 8-9 EST

Oh yeah and btw, The city maps (especially Stalingrad) are supposed to be AMAZING and HUGE. There are I think 4-6 maps that will support up to 64 players. Can you imagine that!!!! But the people who have played those maps say that are so big (4km x 4km) that it doesn't seem like that many people.

I think the smallest maps (Wake Island I think is one of them) are 1km x 1km so image a map 4x that size. Transportaion will be necessariy

MAN THIS IS GOING TO KICK ASS

12 day, 5 hours, 1 minute

After being told how to show FPS in the game, I think I might be forced to buy a new one. My AIW Radeon (32meg DDR) just doesn't cut it anymore. I average about 40-45, and it easily drops to below 30 when things get busy. And this is at 800x600x32 with medium details.

BTW, to show it, go to console "~" character. Type in: Console.showfps 1

- MurderDeathKill

Interesting. I have to try that. But honestly... I have the AIW 8500DV and it rocks. I have it set to MAX res. and MAX details and I hardly ever encounter a hiccup. If I do it is more likely lag from some other player.

On a different note... I hate to brag but I had a awesome time last night. If you played on a EA Hit Back Server you might have seen me as "Black Thunder".
I really got the flight thing down now and I must have frustrated the heck out of the Allies on the Island last night. We held the South end of the Island including the Airfield. Only place to spawn for the US troops was the North Base and the Village. Lets just say... I HAD A FIELD DAY.... worthy of a training Video. Hardly any heavy vehicle made it out of their bases. My bombs where straight and true and I must have gotten 3 Tanks and a couple APC's. Not mentioning Jeeps but I got a couple of those as well. And not while they where stationary either. I caught a couple on the road to the Airfield.
My crowning bombing run came on that road... There they where... ready to make the trip to retake the Airfield. Vital to our efforts I couldn't let them get there... One Bomb=One APC=4 Soldiers. Couldn't help letting go of my controls and typing a quick WHOOOOHOOO 😉

Every now and then someone was smart enough to man the Flak, but that Baby is beatable. Fly low, zero in and drop your load on them. Drop low again and they never get you, nor do they know what hit 'em.

OK... that brings me to one of my pet peeves again... STOP STANDING AGROUND THE CARRIER WAITING FOR A PLANE!@#@^%#&@ :disgust:
Guess what... there is only a spawn if one of the planes crashes. If I am flying you will most likely be standing there for a while! Flak hardly ever gets me! So play like a real team member and if there isn't any planes when you are about to spawn... go take a boat to shore!!!

On my best round with the Dive Bomber, guess what finally got me? On my second reloading trip back to the carrier (Yes... you can reload slowly flying over the base you took off from) I was a little too low and actually hit one of the dummies standing around waiting for a new plane. I must have caught him with my wheel. Well... being on a "hit back" Server that was a instant dead for me. There wasn't just one standing there either... must have been 6 or so. On a 16 vs.. 16 Game... not having 6 to 8 people going after an objective means you CAN NOT WIN.

Here is a tip. If you want to fly... or practice flying. Start a Sever and play for a while alone. You can take any plane you wish and practice taking out the Flak without them ever seeing you coming.
I did practice quite a bit especially with the Torpedo Bomber. Guess what... using the Torpedo like a Bomb isn't cutting it. You need to use it like a Torpedo.... Fly low, skim the water and while gently pulling up just a bit, let the fish go... you actually see the little wake going at the ship. If you did it just right you see the Bang. I'd say 6-8 Torpedoes placed right can sink a ship.

Now I am sitting here at the office... with heavy eyes... must keep awake... must fight sleep. I guess 3 1/2 hours sleep wasn't quite enough. But I had to make just one more bombing run.... hehehe.

Oh... and just so you guys don't get the wrong idea. I practice what I preach. I only spawn at the carrier if there is a plane just sitting there. I was playing mostly as Soldier and Mechanic!

Great post Karsten. That should help people who've had trouble flying. (I knew those things already but I guess thats what differentiates us good pilots from the others😉 ) It took me forever to get enough courage to fly low enough to get a torpedo to work. Also dive bombing is really really fun. I finally figured out a flight path that works (and I think this is how they do it in real life). Fly up really high and a small ways right over the target, then bank to one side till you are upsidedown, now pull back on the stick so you are flying straight towards the ground and drop your bomb where you see a target and pull out of the dive. This can be fairly effective for the single seater planes who can get a lot higher than the 2 seaters who are better for carpet bombing (or are torpedo planes)

My next goal is to try to figure out how to pickup someone. I knew about the reloading but I have yet been able to pickup someone if they are stranded in the water and I have a empty second seat. Supposedly all you have to do is, like the ammo reload, fly real slow and low and when you are right over them if they press "e" they'll get in. Of course its really hard to see someone in the water 😛

Here is a question and answer session that talks a little bit about the map size and server capapbilities:

-------------------------------

Battlefield 1942 now supports up to 64 players playing at the same time. Is that for all maps, or will there be other alternatives with less players?

It is possible to play up to 64 players on all maps if you have a computer good enough (we recommend a dedicated server with a 2 GHz processor and a 6 Mbit connection and for clients a 1,4 GHz processor for a game of that size). We?ve tried to spread the maps so that some of them are funny to play with 4-16 players, some with 8-32 and finally the largest with 16-64 players. If you don?t get 63 of your friends gathered at the same time to play a Battlefield 1942 session, you can choose to play with up to 63 bots instead. Personally I prefer 24-32 though. I feel that I have a better influence of how the game finally ends then.
With up to 64 players the maps has to be huge.

How large will they actually be and will the players be able to use the terrain and different objects to hide behind and make unexpected attacks?

The maps are between 1x1 km and 4x4 km large. The largest maps are huge! Just a single carrier is about 300 meters long, which can be compared with the size of a normal map in Counter-Strike. On the largest maps you will be forced to use the different types of vehicles to travel between the checkpoints in a reasonable time. But there are about 35 different vehicles to use so that won?t really be so big a deal. There would also be no problem to use the terrain because we do not show the player nametags until you have the crosshair floating on the other player for a while, and we show no nametags on players who are behind hills, mountains or buildings.
The game is in it's soul principally an action game, but there shouldn?t be any problems to place oneself in ambush around and acting like a sniper or why not take a destroyer or battleship and act support artillery if you prefer a more cooler and tactical play mode.

So... Is it the 10th of Sep. yet?

Arghhhhh..... I can't wait.

nor can I. I've practically been playing almost 2-3 hours every night. I went and preordered it at EB today 😛

It is amazing how different you game expiricane can be playing on a server with people that know what they are doing and on a server with just people running arround by themself (or waitring in a pile to see who can snatch a spawning Aircraft the fastest) :disgust:

I had a hard time getting into it last night... just couldn't find a server with the right folks to play with.

That brings me to the acctual point, anyone setting up a good server on a fast connection this weekend?

This server is back up

There are quite a few of us from ATOT who play on there and the others are from the forums ArsTechnica so its a lot of fun and good team play. Should be up most of this weekend I'm assuming

I'm going to be in tonight around 8-9. I think I may post in Off Topic later to get more people to join.
