There have been many threads about the different Star Trek shows and movies, but I do not recall seeing one about Batman movies:

I know I saw the Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson/Kim Basinger Batman movie, and the Michael Keaton/Danny DeVito/Michelle Pfeiffer Batman Returns in the theatre and on TV.

I do not believe I have seen any of the other Batman movies (at least not from beginning to end).

I lost track of all of them and I know one is coming out soon, so I may want to try to "catch up".

How do you rank them and why?

Now that heath ledger is dead, I doubt there will ever be a quality batman movie made ever again.

To me, there was only one Batman worth mentioning, and that was The Dark Knight.

Anyone remember the billboard in "I am Legend" showing the Superman symbol over the Batman symbol that was supposed to be a "hidden" plug for an upcoming movie? What ever happened to it?

Between Batman Begins and and The Dark Knight, I honestly think Begins is CLEARLY the better movie. I just don't understand why people gush about Dark Knight. It's way too long, there are serious story structure issues, and it crams what should have been two movies into one. Seriously, the second villain should have been saved for the next movie. S. Goyer was probably a huge influence on the first and I really think the second would have been better if he had worked on it. I really hope Nolan collaborates with Goyer in the next one to the same degree he did in Begins.

I agree. Begins is definitely the better if the two.

I think I'd rank:
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Batman (close one, probably just about as good as TDK)
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin
Batman Returns

Yes, seriously. No matter how bad Forever and B&R were, they sill weren't as bad as Returns.

If you're going to get "caught up", watch Batman Begins before The Dark Knight. They're the two best batman movies ever made IMO, and while it's not required Begins will give you a good bit of background going into The Dark Knight. Either way, I sincerely doubt you'll regret watching them.

I really don't understand how anyone can think any of the Schumacker claptrap was better than Batman Returns.

this makes no sense.

if, for nothing else: fucking Michelle Pfeiffer in a fucking leather cat suit having sex with the screen the entire flick.

I actually liked Val Kilmer as B Wayne--certainly better than Bale--but damn, that one sucked. ...still better than Batman and Robin, though.

Thank god someone remembered Mask of the Phantasm. I thought I would have to bring that up myself. Forget the fact that it's animated; as a Batman story it's top notch.

more directly, for the OP: You only need to see the new ones, then skip the earlier ones that you missed (The Burton/Keaton ones are great--everything else: dreck). They were awful, ...unless you enjoy the quaint pleasure of watching your former governator toss out some great one-liners (this was certainly more entertaining when he was still guv'ner)

anyway, watch the Nolan flicks, you probably won't be disappointed. Begins is easily the best of the two, but mostly because The Dark Knight is simply way too long in the tooth for its own good.

Ledger's Joker is one of the better villains in film of the last decade. Simply awesome (still not as great as Mr Plainview, though).
