Summary for those of us that do not want to watch the video?

Here's a new article of the story - http://www.wxii12.com/news/22648863/detail.html

A complainer says the tip was added though she only had a few people with her and it wasn't a group. I'm assuming there's a history of her poor tipping and they added the tip to ensure that she would include one. I don't see a problem with it or banning her.

Zerocool and others would get banned from this place also. Cheap asses...

I found the poll results in the article to be pretty shocking. Only 1% never leave a tip.

A woman who says Kanpai Japanese Steak and Seafood House refused her service has started a petition to boycott the establishment. But restaurant owners say they refuse to serve her simply because she is such a poor tipper.

Monica Covington said her spat with the restaurant began in 2008.

"I noticed on our ticket that they added 18 percent gratuity and there was only two others with me at the time," Covington said.

The restaurant menu clearly states that a 15 percent gratuity will be added to parties of six or more. Covington said she complained, but paid anyway.

When she returned to the restaurant a month later, Covington said she was informed that she would have to pay an 18 percent gratuity if she wanted to dine there.

"Before we could even get seated, we got into the door and they came to me and said, 'If you aren't willing to pay the 18 percent gratuity, then we can't serve you,'" she said.

Covington said she felt slighted and decided to start a petition demanding fair business practices. So far, 300 people have signed.

Kanpai manager Michael Lam said Covington is a poor tipper, and after a number instances of her failing to tip accordingly, the restaurant ran into problems.

"Yes, because we can't keep continuing to serve her anymore because the servers and chefs are not willing to serve her," Lam said when asked if he refused Covington service.

Lam said he's shocked by news of the petition, which reflects poorly on his business that has been in Winston-Salem for 13 years.

Winston-Salem attorney Carl Parrish said North Carolina law allows businesses to dictate payment terms upfront and to refuse to serve customers who don't agree to the terms, as long as civil liberties aren't in violation.

But Covington insists the business is discriminating against her.

"This petition is to make sure everyone who goes out there gets fair treatment," she said.

You tip based on service level. I normally tip 20%, but if the service sucks they are lucky if they get 5% from me. Sounds like this place expects 18% no matter what. I simply wouldn't eat there if they have that attitude.

How can you see both sides? If what the women says is true (which I doubt any way) then why should she have to pay that 18% gratuity when it says for 6 or more, when their party consists of only 3.

This is stupid, if they're going to refuse people service because they're not willing to pay the 18% automatic gratuity, then they should just raise their prices by 18% and require no tip.

I'm confused by the story. If it is a party of 4 and the menu says 15% to parties of 6+ then she is not in the wrong. Has she been completely stiffing the staff each time she comes in? Is this 18% required for every party/individual?

Anyway, if I walked into a random restaurant and they said "You must agree to pay an 18% gratuity" before they even sat me, I would turn around and walk out. Last time I checked a gratuity is earned.

How about reading the story first.

She goes there a LOT. Enough to where they notice her. So I guess she is happy with the food/service or would not return.

No one, period, has to tip if they don't want. But I am quietly confident if that lady was White, they'd never try to pull that spit.

And no restaurant has serve a serial non-tipper. And I'm "quietly" certain that the wait staff new that this specific customer didn't tip before they started with the gratuity stuff and the eventual ban. You know, because I read the article.

It's not like they did this to some random person eating there for the first time.

The only thing worse than news stories on cnn that they only have video for is idiots working a job that relies mostly on tip income and then complaining that they don't get enough tips.

Out of all the restaurants patrons and they recognize her, I can only assume she must have done something to make herself stand out.

She goes there often(not a random restaurant) and waiters refuse to serve her b/c she's poor tipper so the restaurant is making her pay a 18% gratuity if she wants to eat there.

Steak houses like that can be expensive sometimes. She probably wasn't leaving tips prior to that first time they added it for her. As the manager said, the staff didn't want to server her anymore, because it meant wasted time for them as they wouldn't receive a tip. I'm betting they told her prior that she needed to tip appropriately and she didn't, and the 18% was their response.

She doesn't like it she can go elsewhere.

a rather large woman, the 3 were probably eating enough for 6, so the tip should have been added. Plus, she has a track record of being a cheapskate.

I get upset when they pre-add the tip as well when I am in a group because I usually tip 15-40% and it throws off my calculations.

Business owner is in the right here. Fully within their rights not to serve or allow somebody in THEIR restaurant. Good for them.

Well that's odd, because I've eaten at tons of nice restaurants and not once was I ever required to tip a minimum amount when there were fewer than 6-8 people.

Restaurant people have the right not to serve her.

Customers have the right not to eat at shitty places that require ~20% tip even if the service is terrible.
