You tip based on service level. I normally tip 20%, but if the service sucks they are lucky if they get 5% from me. Sounds like this place expects 18% no matter what. I simply wouldn't eat there if they have that attitude.

this exactly. screw them, mebbe she tips less than others, mebbe their service sucks. id have not paid it as well.

edit: pwned for not reading whole article. if i liked the place id have tipped. if she was constantly giving 10% and they wanted 18%, fuck them.

And no restaurant has serve a serial non-tipper. And I'm "quietly" certain that the wait staff new that this specific customer didn't tip before they started with the gratuity stuff and the eventual ban. You know, because I read the article.

It's not like they did this to some random person eating there for the first time.

you wont be eating at many nice restaurants then. Alot of places do this, this women is stupid and I cant believe this is news.

i cant believe its news either, but youre wrong on the whole nice restaurant thing. ive left a nickel for poor service in a place ive gone to many times. the manager followed me out and apologized for the wait staff and said he hoped id come back. they know when youre dissatisfied, i usually leave a decent tip for standard service. its under 10% for shitty, and a nickel for a waste of time.

Thank god engineering doesn't work on tips. Design something beautiful and pray that I get paid for it.

lol that would be funny tho. especially as i am someone that has to pay ridiculous design fees on occasion.

She probably didn't tip her first couple of times. Then they made her tip 18%. Then they ban her because she's cheap.

I see nothing wrong with that. They can refuse to serve her. That's the owner's choice.

Steak houses like that can be expensive sometimes. She probably wasn't leaving tips prior to that first time they added it for her. As the manager said, the staff didn't want to server her anymore, because it meant wasted time for them as they wouldn't receive a tip. I'm betting they told her prior that she needed to tip appropriately and she didn't, and the 18% was their response.

She doesn't like it she can go elsewhere.

That'd be my guess. If she doesn't like the service on one or two visits, sure, reduce or eliminate the tip. But if she's going there regularly and is regularly leaving a poor tip, then obviously the servers aren't going to want to deal with her, and the restaurant seems to be within its rights to refuse her service if she doesn't agree to the payment terms for said service.

Besides, if the reason she's leaving poor tips is bad service, why would she want to keep going back there anyway...?

If the manager doesn't want to server her, he doesn't have to.
Fixed.

Manager shouldn't have served her, changing the price after the fact (or the requirements for automatic tip/amount) can and should land you in court.

If the menu says 15%, why charge 18%? Answer is obvious, it was punitive.

yeah same here.

I usually same something to manager if they are around and I tipped poorly so he knows whats up if the shitty server bitches later that I'm a douche.

tipping is so not required

I've had douchy servers hit on my then girlfriend all night, ignore me, than expect me to tip out for them. I do not pay people to hit on my SO in front of me. they suffer for being too stupid to realize who was paying the bill!

Being this sounds like it happens often, I am really thinking you have jealousy issues.

A server was probably being polite.

Why am I not surprised that she's black?

My GF is a hair stylist. She has been doing it for about a year, and to this day only 1 black person has ever left a tip. Granted she doesn't get many black clients, but still thats pretty bad.

Black people are known for either not tipping, or god-awful tipping.

nah, it was a few years ago hasnt happened lately. I reread and realized I made it sound more frequent and recurring than I meant to.

its just a good example why saying you always have to tip is bogus.

I have to tip just like you have to give me reasonable service.

I am not a giant douche(most of the time, we all have our moments), if a place is busy, I am going to notice, and will not tip shitty for lackluster service in a busy restaurant as the server doesnt control the kitchen or whethere the boss has enough people waiting.

but when you screw up all the orders, constantly give the wrong drink or food to the wrong person, dissappear all the time, never refill drinks ETC

then you dont 'deserve' 20% like alot of my friends who worked in restaurants claim they do

Seriously, for the restaurant to go out of their way to confront this woman and refuse her service, she must really have had a history of stiffing them. It's one thing to not leave a tip or leave a small tip for bad service, it's quite another to keep coming back and leaving little or no tip just because you're a cheapskate, or trying to afford a restaurant you really can't afford.

My .02

If the bitch don't tip, f*** her...I wouldn't want serve her either. It has nothing to do with race, but obviously she is going to play that card.

I don't think the restaurant is doing a very good job of handling the situation (they cannot actually require a tip unless clearly stated on the menu), and they will probably get screwed out of this. The negative publicity will hurt them. There are better ways to rid yourself of such rubbish.

As a person who worked in the industry, servers work very hard for the little money they get. When I had regular customers who I knew didn't tip shit, I more or less ignored them and gave them shitty service. Managers are usually sympathetic to the servers in this regard, and turn a blind eye. That usually gets rid of em. That's what I would have done to the skanky wise and beautiful woman.

For you who are shitty tippers, go get f***ed and stay home and cook, assholes.

The restaurant is definitely in the wrong, being that they handled it the wrong way.

If they added a mandatory gratuity to the bill when the policy states they shouldn't, they're in the wrong. If it's so bad that no one will serve her then just don't seat her, instead of pulling shady tricks.

Or at least tell her the FIFTEEN% upfront.

Myself personally, a mandatory gratuity always gets less tip, because I always tip more than 15% (with few exceptions), and I will never add a cent to a bill with a mandatory tip (and generally I won't eat there anymore).

Well that's odd, because I've eaten at tons of nice restaurants and not once was I ever required to tip a minimum amount when there were fewer than 6-8 people.

I've been to some incredibly nice places too. Never had a mandatory gratuity for small parties. HOWEVER, I'm going to the French Laundry in a couple of months and there the price does include service. It's the first time I've seen it for a party of 2. Maybe he just dines at places like the French Laundry all the time and thinks places like Alinea aren't nice enough restaurants to bother.

Summary for those of us that do not want to watch the video?

yea hate video only stories. videos should be suppliment, otherwise it basically takes some short headline story you could read in a few seconds and drags it out over a few minutes.

Tipping is such bullshit to begin with.

"Here I'll give you some money and in exchange please do your job with a minimal level of competence and do me the courtesy of NOT adding your bodily fluids to my food."

I hope this restaurant is driven out of business.

Maybe she does go there a lot, it still doesn't mean the servers/whoever have the right to automatically expect an 18% tip....or any tip for that matter. If a tip is mandatory it isn't a tip.

They are fully within their rights to ask for it, but she is also fully within her rights not to give it. Just as they are within their rights to refuse her service and she is within her rights not to eat there.

Agreed. Most service establishments like a restaurant reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, some even have it written on the door. Maybe she should find another place to gorge herself with those 8,000 calories a day.

Business owner is in the right here. Fully within their rights not to serve or allow somebody in THEIR restaurant. Good for them.

I agree...to a point.

"We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone" is often posted in restaurants, and I support that right under most circumstances.

BUT, banning someone because they're a poor tipper is bad PR.

Tipping is optional in these United States of America. It's SUPPOSED to be based on the level of service you receive, NOT automatically levied on a bill.

PSA for all the upcoming high school twits that may be reading this, when you take a job base your expected income on what the operator is guaranteed to pay you. If you don't want to have to rely on voluntary[/] tips or commission earnings on the backend, then get another job.
