Well that's odd, because I've eaten at tons of nice restaurants and not once was I ever required to tip a minimum amount when there were fewer than 6-8 people.

Yeah, but if you go to the same place a bunch of times & keep stiffing your waiters, you will likely face a situation like this.

I dont get it. If she thought the service was bad enough not to tip well, then why did she come back? Clearly she likes the food and service, so she should be tipping accordingly.

She sounds like a cheapskate. I'm siding with the restaurant on this one. They obviously don't require everyone to tip 18%. They just noticed that she came there often and didn't tip. If you don't like the place, leave a bad tip and never come back.

I just make it a policy to treat the workers nice that handle my food especially if I am a regular. You are kind of stupid if you don't because it's no telling what they are doing to your food while you can't see it.

Everyone should watch Waiting, before they go out eating again.

If you read the article, the restaurant said she not only didn't tip well, but sometimes left no tip at all.

Exactly, I won't tip for shitty service. But I also am not going to frequent a place with shitty service enough for them to know me as the guy who doesn't tip.

Speaking of good service, I went to a Chinese restaurant last night with the best service I ever had. We ordered our food and the owner/chef came out and asked us how we liked it, plus she gave us a free order (10.00 meal) of her special honey chicken so we could try something new. The food was great, my glass was never empty and we got free stuff. I tipped 6 bucks on a 20.00 bill. I'll be back.

I didn't watch the video (I'm at work, coffee break) but maybe she's from one of those countries that has minimum wage laws. You know those ones that require you to pay the waiters for doing things like work. Generally the employer is the one who pays for that kind of stuff.

Thank god engineering doesn't work on tips. Design something beautiful and pray that I get paid for it.

She goes there often(not a random restaurant) and waiters refuse to serve her b/c she's poor tipper so the restaurant is making her pay a 18% gratuity if she wants to eat there.

If the story "is as is" then I have to side with the patron. "Gratuity" is NOT a required fee and in some states is illegal to charge a mandatory "gratuity". Now if the staff were to say "There is an 18% surcharge" they would be in the right.

Either way both sides have the option to do what they want. If the story is true in saying that the Chefs had a problem then the restaurant must be doing tip pooling which allows them to pay the chefs $5/hr (or whatever tip wage is).

I'd rather pay more for great service where staff remembers my name, knows what I like and "appears" to be friendly. Then a lesser amount for subpar crappy service by waiters who don't care because they are getting paid the same regardless.

it's a free country and it's a privately owned restaurant, they can refuse service to anyone they like.

You tip based on service level. I normally tip 20%, but if the service sucks they are lucky if they get 5% from me. Sounds like this place expects 18% no matter what. I simply wouldn't eat there if they have that attitude.

sounds li9ke she is the type of person who gets excellent service and still does not tip....

I usually tip 20% even if service is only mediocre. If it's bad, I go down to ~15%, good up to 25%. I know too many people who work in the foodservice industry to not tip well

How about reading the story first.

She goes there a LOT. Enough to where they notice her. So I guess she is happy with the food/service or would not return.

Maybe she does go there a lot, it still doesn't mean the servers/whoever have the right to automatically expect an 18% tip....or any tip for that matter. If a tip is mandatory it isn't a tip.

They are fully within their rights to ask for it, but she is also fully within her rights not to give it. Just as they are within their rights to refuse her service and she is within her rights not to eat there.

No one, period, has to tip if they don't want. But I am quietly confident if that lady was White, they'd never try to pull that spit.

How convenient of you to make this a race issue when it`s clear the lady is cheap and not a tipper no matter how good the service!

...but anyone who eats out and doesn't tip well should be shot.

I would say tip fairly rather than well (I tend to tip well).

The problem most have is they can't get it in their heads that service is 15%...it's just service, not jumping through hoops, polishing your knob under the table, etc.

Also service at a Friday's for that 15% is going to be much less than service at say the Palm Beach Grill for that 15%. You are paying 'less' for it. Also people can't get it through their heads that if a restaurant is expensive, that means they should not tip or tip less "since they already made their money off me"...

I try to shoot for 20% more or less always with a minimum of a 5 spot for lunch.

Some people tip based on service.

Some people tip based on cheapness.

my ex gf was a waitress at a nice local mexican restaurant... a local semi-famous boxer would come in every few weeks - they'd fight over who HAD to serve him since he was such a horrible tipper.

dating her taught me a lot - like servers LIVE off of those tips. I ALWAYS tip 20% or more unless there was exceptionally bad service. Only once in the past few years have I tipped less than 15%

Seems odd to me to like a place enough to be a regular and not tip well or even at all.

If this was some random restaurant, yea that sucks and i'd say the restaurant is in the wrong. But she's a regular and it's gotten to the point where the waiters and waitresses/staff recognize her? That's bad...

tipping is still optional isn't it? Restaurants shouldn't ban based on "bad tipping". BUT, if they state it on the menu, then yes she needs to pay in full. I still think the whole tipping system is a crock. Owners get off easy. Don't give me that crap about charging more for food if they have to pay waiters full wages like normal employees. They're your fucking employees.

Tipping is optional.

Serving a customer is optional (as long as it's not because they're a member of a protected class)
