I would vote against a ban on abortion and I don't really give a crap if gays are allowed to marry each other. I'm a registered Republican BTW.

Oh, and stem cell research is fine with me too.
Again proving the point that "republican" and "ultra conservative" aren't always in the same boat.

Let individuals and religious organizations make that determination.
If the major roadblock is legal/tax status as "married," why do religious organizations have to be involved? There are plenty of "churches" which will marry a same-sex couple. Just the government won't recognize it.

Why isn't marriage a right? Because some religions decided that it's wrong for people to be gay? Marriage isn't a religious issue-- it's a state issue. I plan on getting married some day, but at a courthouse, not a church. What I plan on doing is still considered marriage, even without the religious aspect. It just doesn't make sense.

Heh, and people say that marriage should be about love, not sex. Apparently, it's all about sex.

There is no ban on stem cell research......the issue is using our tax dollars to fund lobbyists and researchers when there is plenty of private money willing to do it. Do you think it's fair that 51% of people can vote to force 100% of the people to fund a science that 49% of the people are against?

That's how democracy works.

I'd agree with you. If civil unions had the same rights as marriages then I'd favor civil unions only for homosexual couples.

That won't work. I used to be of the same mindset. It would cause undue discrimination against gays even more so than today.

Just think about it, you go apply for a job and you have to check the "civil union" box. The employer instantly knows you are gay.

It will create a HUGE backlash. When the employee could have kept his personal life personal, not he wouldn't be able to just because of a simply check mark.

Either call EVERYTHING a civil union or give in on the marriage idea.

How about a box marked "Marriage/Civil Union?"
Correct. Since there would be inherent discrimination with separate "Marriage" and "Civil Union" boxes, they would be lumped together.

It is in the interest of society/government to promote traditional marriage because it increases the tax base and grows the country. Gay unions do not accomplish this.

Yes, but we live in a Republic, not a democracy. This is why I am against pure democracy; it inevitably leads to socialism.

Condidering the declining US birth rate and the fact that gay couples can adopt children, I find this a poor argument.

Maybe it's just me being really tired, but I don't see where you are going with that.

So straight married couples are having less children because gay couples want to get married? Doesn't encouraging marriage promote better and more stable family life, whether straight or gay? Out of wedlock births also "increases the tax base and grows the country" but the government spends $200 million a year telling single 29 year olds not to have sex.

unfortunately, that's probably never (ever) going to change.

the best we can do is look at marriage in the eyes of the law as simply a social contract.

This is a GREAT day for America.

Congratulation.

Just so you know, same-sex marriage is already illegal in Arizona. The prop would have removed benefits for anyone with a civil union, including heterosexual couples.

The religious right successfully rallied old people and college students against it despite giving it a clever name like "protecting the sanctity of marriage." Literally, gay marriages are already illegal in Arizona and the religious right was looking to screw over people, not protect marriage because the bill had NOTHING to do with the religious institution of marriage.

Those other states that passed same-sex marriage bans were actually banning homosexual marriage, a law that was not already in place. In Arizona it was really just a stupid idea from the beginning.

And apparently in Arizona, we've made English the official language even though it goes against our constitution. Strange
