Ballmer: You have to be a computer scientist to use Android

"You don't have to be a computer scientist to use a Windows Phone," said Microsoft's Steve Ballmer, "but you do to use an Android phone." He was addressing the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco, where we guess his audience must have included a large but silent population of Android-loving non-scientists. In any case, the Redmond CEO also revealed that he just can't get "excited" about Android phones,*snip*

This guy is a piece of work, but always good for a laugh. 😛

Careful men, there's a light grenade on the ground.

People love to post this video, because it sounds good when you summarize it the way the video title does - but did you actually listen to what he said? he laughed at the prospect of a $500 phone fully subsidized, and he was right. The iPhone didn't take off until the 3G, when they dropped the price to normal levels. Further, he even says in that video that it might do well, he doesn't completely dismiss it.

Its fun to get into this crowd mentality of mocking things that aren't "geek-cool", but it tends to fall short when you apply a little more critical thought.

He isn't completely off-base, honestly.

Android has proven to be popular, yes. The truth, however, is that most people who own Android devices have no idea what kind of power the OS has. Android is not as user friendly as iOS or Windows Phone, and the user experience is inferior the average user.

The power Android offers is great if you're a power user. The phrase "computer scientist" was obviously a bit extreme, but Android's appeal to the masses is all from well-executed marketing.

Android's ever increasing marketshare takes his opinion and pretty much shoves it down his throat. I don't even remember the last I took Ballmer seriously. The guy is a joke, if I didn't know any better I'd say he's just trolling.

marketshare is explained by the fact that the iPhone was held hostage by AT&T and there was no other choice... I'm pretty sure if you gave people unlimited money and which phone to pick from, the iOS marketshare would grow even more...

his statement is proven invalid by the 2 female friends i have who love their android based phones (think apple levels of love) who are honestly 2 of the stupidest people i know tech wise. as in a TV remote control is hard to understand stupid.

if they can figure it out and fall in love with it anyone can

Did you see the entire video? He was talking just like those RIM idiots.

And if you gave people unlimited money and which car to pick from, the toyota camry wouldn't be the most popular car.

... What do you even mean by that? 😵

Is it so hard to believe that there are people out there that just might like Android enough to buy into it? This is getting old.

Yeah my girlfriend and her mom aren't technically inclined at all. They sure as hell know how to operate their Bionics though.

My android 2.2 phone isnt much different to use than my ipad. click market, download an app, click on pretty icon, use it by touching the screen.
So i don't see how Apple's ios is any more difficult to use than Android or how anyone could find it difficult.

I don't doubt the Camry won't be the most popular car. We attribute it to being popular because:
- Good price performance
- Quite reliable. Not sure about the current gen, but still more reliable than many crappy cards.
- Near the top of the pack for sedans

Certainly people love Android enough to get it. If I had more money, I have no doubt I would have tried iOS more too and switched around handsets, but I'd stick to Android at the end of the day. I'd pick an SGS2 or Nexus over the iPhone 4S.

But for 90% of the consumers that don't give a rat's ass about platforms and care about usability, I can tell you there were more than a few people who dumped their EVOs and other nice Android phones for the 4S the minute it came out.

I'm just saying quoting marketshare when the US has the most fucked up model for exclusivity and carrier subsidization isn't really meaningful. Having the iPhone be VZW's most successful launch already tells you something. I can bet you there are plenty of people on Sprint or Verizon or TMobile that are on Android simply because the iPhone was not available for their carrier. Now how many people on AT&T are on the iPhone because they couldn't get their hands on the Epic 4G?

the sales and marketshare numbers tell the real story, be it ipads or android phones.

i think blackberries of the same generation were even harder to use than androids and for a while their marketshare and pop acceptance was very large.

I swear, Balmer must have some video of Gates doing something highly embarrassing for I can see no other reason that chuckle head is running M$...

This. Android wouldn't be the #1 mobile OS in the world if it was difficult to use, not with the stiff competition it faces.

The Blackberry was the only game in town for a smartphone for years, WinMo didn't present much of a challenge. Easy to have high market share when your competition is non-existent.

Again - actually listen to what he is saying. He didn't insult the device, he insulted the price. Do you honestly think the iPhone would have the marketshare it does today if they'd never lowered the price and the cheapest iPhone you could have have bought was $500 w/ contract?

No, it would still be #1. What else would compete with it? For a while, aside from iOS, it was the only other modern smartphone operating system available. All of the third party handset manufacturers wanted to make something that could even hope to compete with the iPhone. What else were they going to use?

Windows Mobile was a horrid piece of crap and Microsoft didn't appear to have any intentions of getting their crap together anytime soon. Palm eventually came out with WebOS, but they weren't going to let third party handset manufacturers use it. Symbian was about as antiquated as Windows Mobile.

Also, Android was free and associated with Google, a strong brand in and of itself. Even if it was on the same level as Windows Mobile, it still would have been cheaper for the handset manufacturers to use, giving them a better margin on their phones.

Even if it were only getting to 2.2 levels right now, it would still be the largest platform unless you somehow believe that Apple would be able to manufacture more phones than all of the other handset manufacturers put together. Perhaps Android would be less dominant than it is now in such a scenario, but there's no other strong contender for the #1 position.

Which is why everywhere else in the world which has had access to iPhone on multiple carriers since it's inception and got overtaken.

Sales say absolutely nothing about user experience. More than anything, sales are based on marketing.

Windows Mobile was actually fairly popular for a while. It was a nightmare as far as user experience went. Blackberries were quite popular at one point, too; not exactly the easiest phones to use for the average user.

I agree with that but you should listen to the rest of the video. He was being just as hard-headed as the RIM CEOs when the interviewer specifically asked him about iPhone creating a buzz and sucking in the energy from other devices coming out. Ballmer's response was "We sell millions of devices while Apple has sold 0." Point is these guys should have seen the writing on the wall just like Google did.

Now look at how things turned out, 4 million iPhones sold within the weekend, I think that's more than WP7 devices sold all together LOL. The point is he talks out of his ass a lot whether it's about Android or Apple, he has no foresight and it shows every time he opens his mouth.

I wonder what he considers a computer scientist.
