Now this isn't helpful - house republican leadership coming out and blaming the dems - namely Pelosi - for being partisan. If that is the case than it is truly a sad day in America. To let this partisan bickering ruin a solution that people had agreed on is just a pathetic and despicable. I'm going to be looking into seeing how my rep voted to make sure he acted his mind and not his party.

As opposed to Pelosi's bomb throwing on the floor this morning...

I agree. While its stupid for republicans to get all butt hurt over politics as usual and take their ball and go home when they thing the bill really needs to pass...its equally as stupid for democrats to risk derailing the same bill they think is important just so they can score some political jabs.

If the bill is really so important, you'd resist the urge...especially if its expected to be so close.

No kidding. Hell, if Pelosi wants to get her jabs in over this, she'll have all the time in the world. Did she have to do it right before the vote?

Looks like GOP is on a suicide course.

Nope. Pelosi is.

I say that because today marks the day that finishes her in terms of remaining Speaker of the House during the 111th Congress.

Pelosi has been the most inept House Speaker in the modern era. She has time and time again failed to get the support needed before bringing a bill the the floor. She has embarrassed herself and her party one to many times. Sure blame the GOP for this. But its really poor management of the House. The Dems have a commanding majority in the House. If she had done her job this bill would not have failed. Her ineptness let this bill fail.

Good luck with that argument when the "My (Republican) opponent voted against this economic recovery bill" ads start rolling.

You need to go back to school and learn to read. No where did I say the GOP would take control of the House. I simply stated Pelosi's days as Speaker of the House are numbered. She will be challenged, and her challenger will win. My money is on Rahm Emanuel.

You seem to have some sort of emotional involvement with taking down Pelosi. If GOP gets hammered for this, which it will, I don't really care if Pelosi is leader in November or not. I am fine with Rahm.

Whats your definition in hammered?

There only so many seats the Dems could ever pick off.

There are roughly 58 competitive Congressional Districts nationwide. The Dems control a slight majority of these deats(see the Blue Dogs). Outside of those 58 disricts, every other seat will never change hands unless massive realignment of district boundries occur.

You are stupid if you think a bailout package wont be passed between now and then. They'll have one by the end of the week.

Yep....for some reason you and I are the only ones to realize that. Everyone else is busy either screaming about the sky falling or playing partisan politics. Neither of which is more helpful than a one legged man at an ass kicking contest.

So all of those that voted against it are going to loose their elections??? Why? They were getting emails and phone calls 10-1 against it, seems like they may win some votes.

700 points is bad... but it's not Armageddon. Maybe we should wait a few days and see what happens.

How so? The economy isnt going to crash and burn before Nov. 4. And right now the American people are opposed to the bailout.

Doing something other than speeches and grandstanding? Oh the horros, they are getting work done!

Ironically, a speech is probably exactly what we need at the moment. As you can see, calm heads are not prevailing in NY or DC.

I'd say they're protecting themselves by staying out.

They Congress is split almost 50-50. Either way they go there's a big attack waiting.

Do they side with the bailout with 100 to 1 reported opposition from much of the public?

Do they oppose the bailout when it's likely a similar one will pass soon and they can get blamed for being obstructinist against the leadership of the country who agreed to it?

Do they suggest a new approach and look ineffective when it's ignored?

Agreed: a bill will pass, just not this piece of garbage that isn't worth the pixels it's transmitted on.

I don't think anyone is arguing that a resolution won't get passed sooner rather than later, but the problem is, the longer it takes, the more damage is done.

Intellectually challenged? I believe thats you, not me. But thanks for the comment anyhow. Anyone who has to put down another to make their point is the one who is intellectually challenged.

Do you think because this bailout didn't occur that banks will stop functioning? So businesses won't have business accounts anymore? Do you think personal checking accounts for the common man is suddenly going to dry up?

The only thing this bailout was for was companies who needed to fail because they are obviously too intellectually challenged to run their businesses correctly, or BANKED on the idea of it failing. In other words, they took a huge risk hoping for huge rewards, and it backfired. Now I'm the one who has to pay? No way. Thats their risk they failed, they should close shop. Let other companies who understand good business stay afloat.

Where have you been? How many big banks have already failed? I think if you look around you already have your answer.

Speaking of that, Wachovia just collapsed.

well, if you buy wachovia at .97 at open, you'd double your money now....

Wachovia corp, doesn't own any of their banks anyone.

I'll go on record predicting some program is very like to pass in the coming days.

They'll talk to the no votes, find out what's needed to change, and pass something.

Good point, but I'll vote for the one that says "screw it, I don't care how this looks - here's what needs to be done." Politics are exactly what got us into this mess three hours ago.

Psst. I know it too. That's why I'm copping the "Golly, look at that!" attitude, because it is facinating. Obama and McCain also know it. That is why, so far, they haven't thrown themselves in front of a microphone.

Unless some of the yes votes wanted to vote no, and now have the balls to do it.

This could be a clusterfuck

Until they get their 401k statement and see a 10% haircut. Americans say a lot of things.

Again the (R) can't use Pelosi as a legitimate excuse but Pelosi has a long history of opening her big mouth at the wrong time. Everytime I freaking hear her speak, she is blaming (R)s for something or other. And while they deserve alot of blame for alot of things, there is a time and place.

She is an idiot

I'm not suggesting that it's a "legitimate excuse" but when you've only reluctantly agreed to vote for it after much arm twisting - I can definitely see why some would say "screw it" and vote how they wanted before the arm twisting. It most definitely stupid for her to inject partisan politics into this(again) when she kept trying to claim she wanted a "bipartisan" bill.

Meh... Hopefully this thing can be renegotiated and will come back up for a vote without more partisan bomb throwing.

Well, really the problem was them trying to rush the bill and it failing.

If they gave a longer timeframe and took an extra week(which is whats going to end up happening) to bring something to vote, there wouldnt have been added damage of waiting another week.

The damage being done because the bill failed, not because its going to take longer. Inept floor management of the House.

What was going through her fucking mind? BTW, 94 Democrats also voted against this bill but many will see this as a Republican and Pelosi problem.
