Backlash against Mexicans

After 9/11 racism against Arab and Muslim Americans was more prevalent than before 9/11.

Let's say swine flu ended up being a global pandemic that killed millions of people worldwide including many Americans. Do you think Mexicans (or Mexican Americans) would be blamed for the pandemic? Would there be any increase in support for a tighter border restrictions between Mexico and the United States?

Just something to think about before we all die.

Only racists would blame the Mexicans...obviously. Educated, intelligent individuals of course know that there is no reason to blame a country's people for a virus spreading throughout the world.

If there is a large pandemic then - Yes, people would blame Mexicans (and probably anyone who could be mistaken for a Mexican) and yes it would lead to tighter border restrictions and most likely out right racism regarding all Latinos.

The Mob gets crazy when its scared

OP was referring to those that illegally cross the borders, thus potentially spreading the virus.

OP also mentioned Mexican Americans or Americans of Mexican decent. They'd most likely get caught in the crossfire.

when did a nationality like Mexican become a race?

is american a race?

Are German, Japanese, South African races?

I think it will help fuel the call to action to secure the borders as this is reason #1,432,453 why it needs to be done right now.

Is anybody surprised that the cases are coming from CA and TX?

I can't forget all the muslim blood that was flowing in the streets post 9/11 from the huge increase in racism against Arabs/muslims and the pogroms that followed.

Back in school (Eau Claire, WI) one of my good friends and roommates was punched in the face at a bar, the week following 9/11...just because he's brown (Burmese). Irrational hatred is so sad.

I find this thread offensive. Why even consider this topic, unless you are hoping to contribute to this "backlash"?

Border controls may be tightened, but if this or any other virus starts spreading quickly, you may see tighter border controls between States, or even blockades between streets. Only an idiot would attempt to assign blame.

Perhaps a better way to phase the OP's question would be to make it more generalized. For example, pose it to that specific nationalities aren't brought into question. Rather, assume X virus crosses Y nationality line (it can be US to Canada, US to Europe, X island to Y mainland, etc). The question might then be put such that would human nature put blame on the point of origin, and if so, why?
