After 9/11 racism against Arab and Muslim Americans was more prevalent than before 9/11.

Let's say swine flu ended up being a global pandemic that killed millions of people worldwide including many Americans. Do you think Mexicans (or Mexican Americans) would be blamed for the pandemic? Would there be any increase in support for a tighter border restrictions between Mexico and the United States?

Just something to think about before we all die.

I can't forget all the muslim blood that was flowing in the streets post 9/11 from the huge increase in racism against Arabs/muslims and the pogroms that followed.

although it wasnt widespread, there certainly was a backlash against muslims post 9/11

Could it happen? Um, it's been happening for decades.

I certainly don't blame Mexicans for this swine flu outbreak. Could have happened anywhere.

OP was referring to those that illegally cross the borders, thus potentially spreading the virus.

So, those who cross the border legally can't spread the virus? That's the dumbest fucking thing I've read in a long time.

the virus makes sure it doesnt hang out at the official checkpoints so that it can make sure it hitches a ride with only those crossing the border illegally.

Of course they can. I just thought that the "backlash" the OP mentioned was related to people crossing illegally since the OP mentioned tighter border control.

Yup, people ask Mexicans if they're illegal before hating on them.

Can I blame Congress for not passing a real border protection program?

Plus I'm sure the Mexican government delayed releasing information about this "pandemic" so travelers would keep coming. I doubt we even have real statistics about how many people are sick in Mexico.

Thats not what the poster said. A sick individual crossing a border legally may go through medical checks that will preclude them from entering the country while an illegal obviously doesn't.

I traveled through asia during sars and every airport checked for sick travelers to further question them. That (if this continues to grow) is what will happen here (its already started at some airports looking for passengers with a fever).

So sorry but it's not really dumb, just your interpretation of his comments are.

i heard an estimate last night of between 10,000 and 100,000 sick based on a 1% - 0.1% mortality rate (last i heard there were 146 confirmed dead). the numbers that mexico was releasing at the time were well below that.

OP didn't say "river of blood", he said "more prevalent."

You deny that?

What medical checks? There are no medical checks when you come into this country.

Possible Swine Flu Case At BWI

ABC2 News has learned that a flight has landed at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport with several people on board experiencing "flu-like symptoms."

The Air Tran flight originated from Cancun earlier today and landed at BWI shortly before 7 p.m. tonight.

Delia Goncavles is at the airport and is reporting that four men on the flight experienced fevers and vomiting. Those four men were offered treatment at a local hospital, but refused.

Their illnesses have not been linked to the Swine Flu.

The plane was not quarantined and all passengers have left the plane.

OMFG! It's HERE!

I do question why the sick people weren't transported and tested, and quarantined if they were positive for swine flu.

Same goes for the rest of the passengers who have now been exposed.

IF this gets to serious (pandemic) proportions, I expect to see air travel curtailed and people having to have medical examinations to get into the US...especially from countries with large outbreaks.

Not just Muslims.

A Sikh man in Arizona was murdered in what was one the first reported incidents of 9/11 backlash.

"But dat sumbitch with a towl on his haid LOOKED like one-o-them-thar A-Rabs ter me..."

There were quite a few "altercations" around here with some members of the local Sikh population after 9/11 too.
Dumb hicks can't even keep their bigotry straight...

I think it will help fuel the call to action to secure the borders as this is reason #1,432,453 why it needs to be done right now.

Is anybody surprised that the cases are coming from CA and TX?

Majority of the US cases are in NYC.

Educate yourself.

I was going to own spidey but someone already beat me to it... :(

Hard to have such a public outcry to an ethnic group that makes like something retarded like 40% of the population.

Frickin' lasers, that's what we need. Lasers every hundred feet across the border and frickin' laser anything that moves across the border. Problem solved.
