He TRIED. I got the verification email. You can attempt to post listings under any email address you like - the verification email goes to that email address. Rest assured that the listing never got posted after that point.

This thread amuses me even more since it seems to have gotten everyone's panties in a bunch.

Quick question - how is this any different than, say, P-p-p-p-p-powerbook!!!

I wouldn't be surprised at the price he was offering if I would have ended up with counterfeit bills in my hand. It may as well have been a scam in that case.

Cell phone, current price on eBay is around $300-380 depending on condition, I have it listed at $350. The craigslister tried to reason that it's an "older" cell phone and can be bought from the carrier for less than $150 new - which may or may not be true... if you plan on signing a 2 year contract.

Personalty, if you did this to me, I would try to find out your real identity and find out where you live.

I agree... which frankly is what I've done (or even politely replied with a no) 99% of the time. This idiot's offer was just so ridiculously stupid that I had to respond in kind.

My personal favorite was the listing I had that explicitly said NO TRADES, and yes someone emailed me offering a puppy of all things.
 
Haha, kind of funny. CL is totally full of idiots and mostly scam artists. Although OP was an ahole for standing this guy up, I still commend it. I have a real bone to pick with most of the people on CL, I hate the damn thing now.

EDIT: Really I almost have to reserve judgement until we can see what the OP and the buyer said, though.

Carrier's offer big discounts and rebates for 2 year contracts. He was probably telling the truth.
I would stop explaining.

Don't want to derail this thread but I didn't know about this and just read up on it, pretty awesome. But does anyone know what happened to the guy that did the p-p-p-p-p-powerbook reverse scam? Did he really disappear?

BTW, I'm gonna guess that the OP's item was an iPhone 4.

Most of the deals I've completed on craigslist conclude with a brief conversation about how nice most people are to deal with. The serious buyers and sellers always have a few minutes to chat, even if you're just meeting up at a Starbucks or 7-11. The people in a hurry make you feel like they are scammers or antisocial.

I discard most emails that lowball, and only deal with serious adults that aren't afraid to follow up on their word.
