Most of the deals I've completed on craigslist conclude with a brief conversation about how nice most people are to deal with. The serious buyers and sellers always have a few minutes to chat, even if you're just meeting up at a Starbucks or 7-11. The people in a hurry make you feel like they are scammers or antisocial.

I discard most emails that lowball, and only deal with serious adults that aren't afraid to follow up on their word.

You know I agree - every actual transaction that I've been party to on CL, usually spend a good 10-15 minutes talking to the person before/after the fact - in person. It's sad that out of maybe 20 emails on any given listing, about 8 are nigerian scammers, 10 are lowball/trade offers, and there's maybe 2 that are legitimate offers.

*shrug* Isn't that what I just said?

Ah, I just assumed you were questioning his statement rather than affirming that you weren't even being lowballed, just having your price compared to an alternative that's available to the buyer.

I lowball everybody on CL. I've ran into people desperate enough for cash that I get great deals. Worst that could happen is they tell me no, or rant like Sunny D did. Doesn't hurt me at all and you wasted more time replying than I did with you.

I would say your numbers are about right, but in my experience 2/3 are nigerian scammers and the majority of the rest are absurdly idiotic lowballers.

Cliffs:

- Posted item for $X
- Idiot emails me with lowball of less than half of asking price
- I rip him (sick of ridiculously stupid lowballs, figured I'd "vent")
- Idiot replies with stupid
- I decide to make the best of it, reply that he's right I changed my mind and need the $$$
- Idiot agrees to meet up
- I (obviously) stand up idiot
- Idiot complains at me for standing him up
- I point out the price he's asking and his "argument" of why it should be that price are seriously flawed
- Idiot "gets even" by posting rant on CL and trying to post a listing under my name for a hot item at a stupidly low price, which of course *I* get the listing notification/confirmation for. Duh.

You're the only asshat in this story.

Thanks - that's what I was actually shooting for.

btw: What's with all the "Thread Backfire" pics anyway? It's not like I was looking for validation or whatnot. I knew what I was doing and yes, I was trying (and succeeded) to be a douche.

lulz. Unfortunately, I wasn't trying to be when I posted my thread.

For those that remember the thread, he gave me a wad of cash and said it was the full amount. He was $20 short. I made him cough up the full amount (where he miraculously pulled out two extra $20's and only gave me one). He also made me wait for an hour to complete the transaction so he could "test the bike lock." We don't talk anymore.

I just don't understand how your course of action improved your situation in any way. You basically "made an enemy" for no gain. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Oh... sorry - didn't mean to make anyone think this was a parody. BTW, your sig is broken.

You've never argued over the internet? This is like that. It gains the arguer NOTHING other than some self-satisfaction if they "win".

The scary part is if the guy uses another email or ask his friend to buy from you and you two agreed on a price, arrange a meeting place to assault you.

Eh, I've already removed the listing, not that there was enough identifying information in it. I had started to receive a few "interest" emails after his rant posting, and figured it was him trying to jerk me around. I knew the best course of action was simply to remove and repost later.

Oh yeah? What would you do then, Mr. Internet Tough Guy?

There is nothing keeping the buyer from making another offer to SunnyD under another identity, arranging a meeting and dealing with SunnyD one way or another. You never know what you are dealing with on the internet.

Ah, the timing of this thread sucks. I'm getting ready to put a ton of stuff on CL. Why CL? Too big to ship, item not really worth trying to EBay, mostly. I"m just going to put really, really fair prices (like $25 for a used stroller we paid $300 for, new) and say the price is firm. If it doesn't sell in a week, I'm throwing it all away.

All you fuckers stay the hell away from my listings in San Diego, OK? Lowballing scum, the lot of you!

I had a woman asking about a knockoff Chanel purse I have listed and she was wanting it for her sister. When she said she was from Cape Cod I said go away scammer and she went on about how they have more money than anyone in my state and I just told her good then she could afford a new, real version

That might be hard to happen if you meet in a public place, like a McDonald's. :hmm:

You know the sad thing is even if you put in PRICE IS FIRM in the listing, you'll still get a ton of lowballs. :(

as anyone who lowballs constantly can tell you, just because you type FIRM in your listing doesn't mean you're actually FIRM on your price

craigslist its either lowball or free. Have a nice furniture that I paid 1700 and selling for 800. The person wants $100. Friends has a nice car that was upgraded to $10000 in parts. Lowballer ask for $3000. Friend decided to keep.
