To everyone ragging on this, it's just a short trailer that doesn't convey the true medium it's meant to been seen in (3D).

Cameron has made some of my all time favorite movies and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that this will be amazing.

Just fandango'd my ticket for the 3D Imax show next sunday on the 'real' Imax screen in lincoln center. A little surprised how available tickets are, Dark Knight imax was sold out for about a month.

That's because comparatively, no one gives a shit. I know I'm still skeptical, that's for sure.

Yep. while there is a tonne of advertising out there, the pre-movie word of mouth on this thing is not so great. I'll probably see it at some point, but it's not a rush out and see event type of movie for me.

I've been a fan of JC for a long time, and a couple of his films are all-time faves (T2, The Abyss), but I really think it's gonna be a stretch for this thing to be profitable, even considering global ticket sales. Combining the production budget with marketing costs, it's gonna need some serious juice to take home some change.

They probably don't have the kids on board for this (like Transformers)
They almost certainly don't have the female audience interested (a la Twilight, Titanic, Greek Wedding .. repeat ticket sales xxxBillion)

I just don't know. I'm probably a target audience member (pretty geeky late 20s / early 30s), but I'd be a lot damned more likely to go see a repertory showing of 'Serenity' or 'Star Trek' than this thing. A big put off to me is that I don't really like any of the main actors in this other than Sam W, and I actually make a point of avoiding Michelle Rodriquez.

Hahaha, same here! When I saw her pop up on screen, I actually exlaimed "oh FFS, not her!". :D

I think you are right, that is a lot of dough to try and recoup and as I have not spoken to anyone that has said this movie looks awesome and I can't wait to see it. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

This movie will do well.

Prediction, breaks December opening weekend record.

Interesting tidbit...first movie to hit one petabyte of data...

I played this movie on the PC. It was called Tabula Rasa. I'll spare you the details and just say that it got shut down after about a year (MMO). :)

i dunno bout that, all the LotR movies opened in december and they got beat by I Am Legend (i.e. Will Smith). I don't see how this flick can top those given the seeming lack of appeal/interest in the target demo.

I think this will look amazing in 3D.
The problem is, based on everything that has been detailed for JC's camera system and 3D technology, I'm betting the design of the characters and everything was geared entirely toward being displayed in 3D, and thus naturally they appear to pop out of their environment when viewed flat without the 3D experience, not so much as pop-out depth wise, but I think they just look like seeing them without the 3D shine, everything will look "off".
Thus, I want to see this, in 3D. :)

I'll wait for the reviews. If it gets universally panned, then I won't watch it at theaters. Otherwise, this is definitely one to catch on the big screen.

It's already premiered in London and advance word says it is awesome and an oscar contender. Cameron is king again...

"He" is a blue shemale, hardly a badass like a predator or terminator. I haven't seen the movie so maybe I don't get it at all but why make a movie and have the aliens look like damned prancing faggy elves? Really, why?

I'd like to hear what people say after tonight's premiere.
