If you agree with this, both of you may be visually deficient and in that case it is not movie's fault.
For example, some people are color blind - can you imagine how much sensory experience they are missing?
Obviously a color blind person would find a movie that is based for the most part on interactions between colors boring.

3D added nothing to the movie.

i have 20/20 vision, and am not color blind.

assuming that people who disagree with you are deficient in some manner is a sign of delusion.

Great movie. I even got misty eyed a couple of times. I didn't want to look flaky so I fought those tear drops, lol. I will probably see it again.

So forgive me if I'm wrong, but apparently the movie can be seen 3 different ways.....

IMAX 3D
Regular 3D
Regular 2D

Is that correct???

wait, if you see this in a regular theater you still have to watch 3d sequences?

Only if they filmed it in the special IMAX 3D process which is highly unlikely since they used their own 3D technology for the movie so they're probably just using the same 3D that you'll see in regular theaters.

Only if you want to. They have regular versions of it and trust me, you're not missing much as 3D doesn't add much to the movie.

the 3D and the imagery added A LOT to the movie. I went in expecting a bad movie. I was very wrong. It was very entertaining and it looked great, in part to the 3D aspect. Watching clips on tv or online made the movie look like trash but it was far from it.

I think being 3D helped a whole lot.

Seems there is a difference in perception with the 3D effects between people. So perhaps we can all stop calling people legally blind if they can't "see" the 3D effects or telling others that the 3D effects are garbage.

Me and my friend where very impressed with the 3D effects, it's kind of hard to describe. Also note the whole movie does not look like the characters are walking in the air in front of you (at the theater), it's select scenes that really stand out from time to time that make you go "wow"
like when they are climbing the floating bolders to get to the flying lizards or a scene with a bunch of holographic displays
.

I liked the nods to Alien (Sigourney Weaver yelling at "Parker") and Outland (Mine manager with a golf fixation).

I too am one that doesn't think the 3D-ness is all that necessary, but maybe it's partially because it gave me a bit of a headache.

I'll buy it on Blu-ray, but will watch it in 2D. The only reason for me to have a 3D version is for demos for friends.

Much better than my friend's response. I saw on Digital 3D, but my friend saw it on IMAX 3D and said he was on the verge of throwing up for almost half of the movie, and usually 3D movies don't bother him.

I saw this movie this afternoon and was surprised that in spite of the fact that it is 160 minutes run time, it didn't seem nearly that long. Of course I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy fan so I was easily immersed in the movie. The CGI was incredible and will probably be the benchmark for CGI for some time to come. The story is somewhat predictable and character development only exists for a handful of characters. The movie somewhat politicizes corporate greed and military force as necessary for the advancement of humanity. At the same time it promotes a spiritual theme of all living thing being a part of a greater whole, at least in regard to the aliens and their existence on their planet. There were a couple of instances that I found to be a little stretched as far as keeping with a realistic plot, but for the sake of those that haven't seen it I won't bother to mention them here. The premise for this movie could have easily been expanded to multiple movies with a climactic 'Return Of The King Of The Ewaks' or something like that for the final movie, but thankfully we just get this one marvelous epic tale.
Joe Bob says check it out. I give it 4 1/2 stars. If you're not a fan of science fiction or fantasy you should sit this one out.

^ Not so far... word is that Sam Worthington signed a contract for more than one movie giving them room for a sequal if they want to make one.

James Cameron has said that if Avatar is successful, he'd like to do two sequels.

So yup, there's a trilogy coming.

I just saw it in 2D and it was by far the best sci fi flick I've seen in long time.

Destined to be a classic like Blade Runner etc...

Yet again another movie that shows 3-D is just a stupid gimmick. I loved the movie but there was only one or two shots that showed off how cool 3-D is. The whole movie would have been just as awesome without 3-D.
The whole reason the 3d experience was so successful in this movie is because the director was NOT trying to wow you with the 3d effects. The 3d was subtle, and aided in the immersion of the movie.

When 3D is subtle, it is not needed, esp. when it is headache or nausea inducing.

If you don't get bothered by 3D, by all means go for it, but I'm happy without it.

imo the movie was great. Sure it had some cliche parts but as a whole, the film came together really well. I got chills a few times.

I wasn't saying that you are deficient, I was just giving an example on how a situation like that COULD happen.
Also, my wife is into the foreign, difficult movies - like these fancy Italian and French dramas and what not. Pisses me off because she would not see most of the movies that are being played in regular cinemas.
So I tricked here yesterday into going and putting the 3D glasses on, and she loved the movie "experience" and the 3D effect. As a matter of fact she is seeing it again tonight.

On the other hand,
I am thinking about your statement above more, and if you are saying that the 3D added NOTHING to the experience, you may be deficient. And this has nothing to do with me being angry about you disagreeing with me. Not at all. I just feel bad that you missed the experience that was there.
Are you sure that you are not "3D effect blind"?
Did you put the glasses on?
?

P.S. People, watch it in 3D - with glasses. It will blow your mind. DO not watch the poor quality screeners from bittorrent. Take your time and go watch it in the IMAX theater with someone who does not like these type of movies. In addition, this will be a perfect "first date" movie too.

It really burns my ass when you go see a movie about alien life forms and they end up speaking perfect English.
That annoys me too, except in this case they had a good explanation for it, and of course only some of them spoke English.

James Cameron really covered his bases. Although the dialogue was kinda bad at times, the writing was still tight in many ways. Some might think the above plot device was kind of a copout, but IMO it worked well enough.
