I just came back from seeing the movie in IMax 3D. Very, very nice experience but it got a little long. The 3D experience was mind blowing.

People who tell's you the 3D effects don't add anything to the experience or think this movie is nothing special are fucking morons.

I highly recommend this movie to anybody.

I will see it again when they start renting it at the corner store.

Say what you want but I'm not easily swayed by waving something shiny in my face to get my attention. 3D added nothing to the movie and made certain parts worse.

Anyone who says the 3D didn't add anything is crazy. Great movie, great 3D. It wasn't obtrusive at all. I loved the little details like the arrow coming toward you or the 3D embers.

Lol made parts worse? Give me a specific example. The 3D was fairly subtle except for the a few scenes early in the movie, i.e. HUD in the research center.

Funny how the story inadvertently parallels the oil in the middle east.

please tell me you aren't really that freaking stupid...

That was the WHOLE POINT of the movie. For one thing it included like 5 DIRECT quotes from George Bush. Next your gonna be saying that the marines were inadvertently similar to Blackwater.

Any link to support that assertion? You may well be right I just don't remember it.

I wonder if it's part of the "fight terror with terror" pep talk? Other than that, I can't think of any other scenes. I'm scanning the usual suspects, which are any conservative/ultra-right wing blogs. Most have negative reviews (no surprise) but I haven't found too many talking about specific quotes just yet. I'll keep digging cuz I'm curious myself.

Honestly I think without the 3D I wouldn't watch it again. I didn't dislike the movie but the story was just another Lawrence of Arabia/DwW/Last Samurai type.

Do they release these movies for home in 3D? and do they look very good on a home HDTV if they do?

Exactly

I enjoyed it and you have to respect the technology that went into creating the alien home planet and its inhabitants. Anyone who wasn't impressed by the CGI work I have to call liar. With the story it was nothing new but I didn't find it distracting at all. There was one scene however at the end with the animals that I kind of rolled my eyes at.

That was the problem it needed a better story. The visuals were stunning but that never makes a movie for me. I much prefer great storyline and worst visuals than better visuals and a ok storyline.

I loved the movie. Amazing scenery, the right length so that the story felt neither rushed nor drawn-out and boring, and while parts of the story have certainly been done before, that is ALWAYS the case with big-budget movies. I liked the Dark Knight as well, even if at its core it's just another superhero action movie...well, it's a superhero action movie done WELL. Same for Avatar.

Besides, personally knowing people who are fighting to keep from having their jungle destroyed for open-pit copper mining just might give me a little bit more sympathy for the main characters.

You see that is the problem. That is why the unknown small films always turn out more surprising and better. They focus on having a great story as priority which is what needs be. Great visuals mean nothing without a great storyline to back it up.

Just got back.

First off, the 3d effect is pretty subtle for most of the movie but really gives you some good depth perception when you have things staggered at different distances. This is a very good thing, and helps to draw you into the movie so you don't even realize you're watching a movie at times. It definitely helps you feel like you're "there". Now for some of the issues I had with the 3d. One issue was that because I didn't go to Imax 3d, the center of the screen was the only place I really could get "into" the 3d. Around the boarders I couldn't easily because the flat edges in the theater gave my eyes perspective which killed the 3d effect. The biggest issue with the 3d were two fold (although I believe symptoms of the same core issue). There were pan scenes where it would stutter, which Cameron has already addressed. The bigger problem with this was when there were either like butterflies or something that was at the edge coming into the scene, or the camera moving back and something just entering the cameras FoV. It would kill the 3d effect and looked bad IMHO. Overall though the 3D I'd give a 9/10.

Onto the actual movie. The plot was very predictable, and a story you've seen before. That said it was still good. It was very well written, and a very satisfying movie. You shouldn't go into it expecting to see some new amazingly new and creative story, because you'll be let down. Go in with an open mind, and look at how well that same old story is told this time. I enjoyed the movie, and think people should go see it for the well written story that it is. Oh, and FWIW people went into Titanic knowing what was going to happen and the basic plot. It still is the all time highest grossing movie as of now. I'd give the movie itself a 7.5/10.

I'm going to go see it again I think in Imax 3d. It's worth it if you have the right frame of mind (i.e. not expecting some new story with major plot twists and such). Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10, and everybody should see it in theaters.

Also, I heard a rumor that this will NOT be released on DVD/Blu-ray since you can't get the 3d at home as of now. Anybody know if that's true?

From a business perspective, I doubt they're gonna just leave 50 million on the table.

Some small indie ass producer who cares about the art? Maybe. Whoever bankrolled avatar? Not likely.

It is not. Nobody of any relevance who might actually know has said anything of the sort, AFAIK.

Plus, it would be counter to the usual way these things play out: Release 1 version. Change it slightly and release it again. Rinse and repeat. A true 3D version would be a great excuse to re-release it, and charge a 20% premium.

B.S. Journey to the Centre of the Earth was in 3D at home, so that would not be a reason.

That was kind of my take on it (provided of course that they couldn't get the 3d effect at home now).

Oh, it could very well be a 2D only release. 3D in the home currently sucks. Did you you see the 3D version of Coraline? It was terrible (anaglyph) on Blu-ray.

However, there is a new 3D standard coming, and I wouldn't be surprised if it they re-released it for that.

So the question now is how will they release the Blu-ray Avatar? 2D only? Or 2D + crappy 3D? As for me, I won't really care much, as 3D gives me a headache, so I'll just be watching in 2D anyway.

They'll release an anaglyph version of Avatar to video over Cameron's dead body. There is no way he'll let a distributor fuck up what he spent a decade making to score a few extra bucks sooner rather than later.

they were mercs, former marines and solders, security for the mining corp, it was intentional.

enjoyed the movie and would love to fly on one of those Banshees.

I hope you're right. 2D only first in 2010, and then maybe a 3D version in a few years.

Just got back from Avatar in 3D. Was it good? Yeah, I enjoyed myself. It looked beautiful, and most of the time the 3D was really neat. Scenes with a lot of motion in 3D, however, contained quite a bit more blur than 2D. The plot? Absolutely nothing special, it was Ferngully crossed with Pocahontas. The acting? Eh, again, nothing special. I really enjoyed it, but it's hardly anything revolutionary.
