If you do a search for quarries in the USA on Google Maps, you will see the United States is littered with quarries and our planet has not been destroyed.
The non-military leader showed the 3D map of the mineral deposit on Pandora. MOST areas did not have the mineral under the surface. They wanted to mine at the areas with the large deposits (large deposits of a material not even being directly used).
So... they were not "EXACTLY" destroying the planet.
About the memory-holding trees: It was that stupid bitch's job to do research and figure out everything about the planet. She failed to figure that stuff in time - it was no way the corporation's fault. Were they supposed to give her an unlimited timeline? And even still, the fact that they tried doing research through her is more than they have to do to solve a WORLDWIDE ENERGY CRISIS.
