I just came back from seeing it.

It was OK. The FX were pretty good although some of the creatures had this shiny appearance to them.

The story was as you expect. Nothing Oscar worthy but keeps you interested.

The matinee showing was $12. I can't imagine how much the regular price ticket is.

Just got back from an Imax 3d showing, sat too close to get the whole 3d effect though.

Visually the movie is amazing, probably the most important movie visually since The Matrix. Cameron created a entirely believable 3d world that looks like nothing we have ever seen. Not once did I look at something and think "that's just a computer graphic.' The movie really does immerse in its world.

Story wise... it was good. It wasn't Casablanca or The Godfather, but it wasn't Gigli or Phirana 2 either.

I would definitely go see it again in either 3d or 2d.

BTW I would expect this movie to make many of the top 10 lists of the year and to win all of the visual and sound Oscars and perhaps snag a best picture and best director nomination as well, but I doubt it wins either of those two.

Are you one of those guys who is anti-popular? If so, then you can probably pass on this to increase your street cred.

No cus the word great movie is reserved for a great movie. Dark Knight is far from it. Once you've seen great movies then you'll know what a great movie is. Good movie sure but that's it. Entirely overrated.

I think you've got a great list there, perhaps with the exception of TESB, which was a great spectacle, but not necessarily a great film (acting/writing/etc), in which way it may be similar to 'Avatar'.

Schindler's List OTOH has held up exceptionally well. I watched it fairly recently in HD for the first time and was really impressed with the whole production, top notch stuff from top to bottom.

Batman : The Dark Knight was a really good film overall, helped greatly by the exceptional presence of Heath Ledger's joker. There were a lot of little faults, not least of which was an overlong length, a relatively cardboard performance from Christian Bale, and the terribad miscasting for the female lead (good actress, but 'melted face' doesn't make sense as a romantic interest for Bruce Wayne).

Well see how people get worked up just cus I said it was only a good movie and not a great movie? People treat it like it's the second coming of christ. It's a good movie that's very entertaining but no where near a great film.

That's after the fact dude. When you sat through it the first time, it was amazing! Now everyone sees its flaws and its just so-so.

Honestly, as the poster above you mentioned, I feel it could've been a great movie had the editing been better in terms of length. The Godfather was also "long," but it didn't detract from the overall experience. Dark Knight, on the other hand, probably could've been two separate movies and been great; because they lumped it together as one, and tried to take on too much, it seemed to drag on at points.

Although I'll agree (again, with a previous poster) that Heath Ledger's performance really did carry the movie.

I saw the movie too and it was great. The VFX were absolutely amazing and convincing. Think Crysis for a movie. Otherwise the story was basically a sci-fi Pocahontas. Which really isn't bad. Best of all though... $3.50 per ticket with a microsoft pass :)

Saw the movie today. Thinking about it now, it really isn't the best movie overall... very flat in a lot of ways, to be sure.

However, I cannot recall the last movie that transported me into its world as much as this movie did. I literally felt so unbelievably sad after leaving the movie, because I felt like I was leaving the Avatar world....

It's hard to explain, but just for that reason alone I would say you should not miss this movie... I'm so stoked to see it again, just to go back to that gorgeous and interesting world...

Just saw the movie. Loved it. Everyone go see it in 3D, it's too good to wait for a DVD release. Even a Blu-ray on your precious home theater setup will suck compared to how it looks on the big screen.

?

Western (white) people and their evil corporations enslave a minority race (blue) and pillage their planet for resources.

I know some people cant look past the shiney objects and see actual messages in movies, but you have to keep up here.

Just like the congo! How fun.

(I'm seeing the movie tomorrow)

I guessed for 125mm opening weekend. I'm sure $15-$20 ticket prices will help my cause

I nailed it! Too bad I didn't bet you a pepsi or something ;)

My guess (earlier in the thread) was 60-80m, with the smart $ being somewhere in the middle. So mid 70s is right on! Still a LOT of money considering the limitations in theatres and the long running time which equals less showings per day per theatre.

If it falls to ~30m next weekend, I think it's going to start getting harder to make a big profit off of this thing, although I hope it at least pays for itself. Would definitely like too see this tech work seamlessly with better screenplay/plot/characters.

Unless I hear from someone I trust with excellent film taste (this means YOU KeithTalent!) that it's a legitimately good MOVIE and not just an FX extravaganza wrapped around a blah story, in which case I'll skip it till cable or whatever.

Believe me it is as classic as Heaven's Gate and Ishtar!
