The 348 came out in 1958, the 396 came out in 1965 😉

(On a side note, the 396 BBC was nicknamed the "Mystery engine" because it had "Porcupine" cylinder heads. )

I need to make these questions more obscure.

The 348/409/427 was Chevy's first BB. They were called W engines because of their canted valve heads with highly scuplted valve covers. They were based on a block with a 74 degree angle instead of the usual 90.

Incorrect sir, the 427 was based on the 396, the 427 does not have the "W" shaped valve covers 😉

You need to study drag racing in the early 1960's. The W engine was made in displacements of 348/409/427. The last drag racing engine from Chevy was a 1963 427 based W engine. The AMA ban on racing killed GM's racing development at the time and allowed a no-holds-barred fight between Ford and Chrysler.
 
Chevrolet never made a 427 "W" engine with a 74 dgree angle, please show me with a link 🙂

Randy Leffingwell has an excellent book about the cars in the Otis Chandler collection that mentions the W-based 427. It also has my two favourite muscle cars in it: '68 'Vette L-88 and the Mustang 428 Super CobraJet Notchback Coupe (one of only 50 SCJ Notchbacks). I always liked the notchback Mustangs better than ther fastbacks.

I prefer the 1969 1/2 6bbl RoadRunner (and Super Bee too) and the 1970 Buick GS 455 stage1 (GSX too).

Hmm, some clarification is in order here. The W motors did not have canted valves, the Mark IV (366/396/427/454) engines did. The W motor valves all operated at the same angle, but they weren't in-line across the head (perhaps that's what you meant, and that's the reason for the 'W'-shaped valve covers). And the cylinder bore angle of the W motor block was 90 degrees, the angle between the decks was the unique characteristic, it was over 90 degrees (can't find the exact number right now :| , but the reason for this was that the combustion chamber in these engines in within the cylinder bore, not the cylinder head) 😉

But Roger, the Z-11 427 was the Mark II 'Mystery Engine', not the Mark IV 396. From the link you found:

DELCO stands for: Dayton Electric Labs Company

AC stands for: Albert Champion
