my audigy 2 is on the way, conviently, the old yamaha sound card in my #3 system died yesterday, so it was time to get one!

For the digital coax signal, that's still correct. The Audigy 2 itself does NOT do Dolby Digital or DTS ENcoding. It can DEcode 5.1, but the soundclips for the speaker test are not 5.1 encoded. That's why the 5.1 sound test using digital coax only outputs stereo left/right.

Exactly, s/pdif passthrough using the digital output will ONLY output the source in its original format. For instance, if you use s/pdif passthrough to your A/V receiver, your Audigy/2 is no longer doing any of the decoding, its "passed through" to the receiver to do the decoding. For analog sources, chances are it'll be done in vanilla Dolby Surround sound.

The Audigy 2 (not sure about Audigy) will do DD-EX upmixing from an analog/stereo source, but only if you use the analog outputs. The decoding/upmixing is handled by the Audigy 2 itself, and you will get 5.1 speaker output from any source, digital, analog, stereo, etc.

How much the Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 speaker test produces sound to all 5 speakers correctly then through SPDIF? Now I am confused.

As Ice9 mentioned, the nForce2's SoundStorm can do real-time DD encoding, which means it can take a 2-channel analog stereo source and encode it into AC-3 which is passed through the s/pdif output as 5.1 sound.

let me just ay one thing .....when i played my audigy 2 platinum ex with my klischp 4'1 speakers by buddy almost sh!t his pants.....that was the best sound he had everheard coming from a pc sound sys..........the upgrade to the platinum ex from the sb live was money well spent
