Probably should have kept the fireplace lol

Those are super inefficient, I had thought of putting a wood burning insert there before I took it out but it was just overall in a terrible location, so I don't regret taking it out. I can actually put my couch in front of the TV now, where it belongs. Couldn't do that before. The wood stove will have a decent foot print in the basement though, but it's a trade off. May have to do ventilation changes to circulate the air where I want it.

Why the basement? Put the wood stove in your living room/first floor. Do you really want to run down to the basement to check on the stove? Put it in the room you spend the most time in. My parents had an efficient wood burning stove that the used for heat for over 40 years. It was my job, as a teenager, to fill up the indoor wood rack each day during the winter. As long as you have plenty of free wood, that's a great idea. Don't forget to clean that chimney yearly!

No room, the layout is just not ideal for it. When I build my cabin I'll make sure there is room to have it in the living space though.

I might setup a web cam so I can watch it remotely though. When working night shift I might want to put a load of wood in it and head to work, so I'll want to watch it.

And yeah I'll want to be sure to clean the chimney. Was also told if you do a really hot fire once in a while that can help, but still want to do a proper inspection/cleaning once in a while at least.

As I'm typing with cold hands I'm really starting to lean towards pulling the trigger though. I can also kill two birds with one stone, and use it to heat the garage too with a glycol loop or something.
