I still need to fully rebuild my home virtualization setup. Really want to do 2+ boxes with some basic HA or at least just a regular cluster where I can move VMs around. Probably do Proxmox but last I tried it, it felt very primitive. I'm sure it has improved a lot though. Really my whole server setup is somewhat aging compared to what's out there these days. I'm hoping AMD starts putting integrated graphics in their Ryzen CPUs at some point, that's probably the best bang for the buck as far as processing power. Going with something that has ECC is better though but it just jacks the price up like 2x. not so much the ram itself, but the motherboard and cpu. Epyc is just insane expensive, if I do go server grade I'd go Xeon.

I think DDR5 is going to have built in ECC by default though even on desktop stuff, so I am maybe just better off waiting for that platform to come out. It will be a good 3-5 years before buying PC parts makes sense anyway. TSMC needs to build more fabs.

Eh? You can get a new 1U epyc from hp for like 4k. off lease ones are cheap as well

When looking at buying just the processor alone they were in the 10k range especially anything over 8 core. That's actually not bad and only $140 shipping which is cheaper than what servers typically ship at. How did you manage to find that? Any time I search for servers on ebay the shipping is always completely insane like $900+ so I tend to be turned off by that. If you get something defective or what not you can't really get that money back. I think that is actually why some sellers set the shipping so high.

Only downside of buying Dell etc is there is no guarantee that any ram will fit though and everything tends to be rather proprietary. I know there are specific models of Dell that will take off the shelf ram but it's kind of a gamble.

Didn't Epyc JUST come out like a few years ago? Odd that there's already stuff on Ebay with it.

Either way, not ready to buy just yet though but nice to look at options. I think by the time DDR5 is out I will be more ready.

lol I just searched on ebay, nothing special. Ram is not much of an issue, just need to check for dell compatible when buying. one thing with Dell though they will hard brand an Epyc processor so you can't really sell that cpu later if you upgrade.

here brand new 8 core epyc server.

24 core 64gb ram, US$2700

Still on the expensive side vs building multiple desktop grade boxes though especially since that's US dollars. But yeah it's good to know this stuff is at least available. Probably come down in price by the time I'm ready. Nice thing with server grade is the boards can take a crazy amount of ram. Desktop you're usually limited to like 64GB though I think some of the newer boards can go up to 128GB. But it's also non ECC.

So yeah compromises. I have to say my current setup has been fairly reliable so maybe ECC ram has really helped me here and I should stick with it. My only reliability issues are NFS being so slow. Every now and then it just bogs down for no reason and VMs start to get IO errors. When I rebuild my setup I want to do iSCSI, just need to figure out a cluster aware file system that will work with Linux and that is easy to setup. Gluster or Cef seems to be the main ones but it looks pretty involved.

Got more OT tomorrow. :D The part for the voicemail system is suppose to show up some time tomorrow so tech will still be busy with it.

Maybe I can use my OT money to buy one of those Epyc servers... lol.

I think morning painkillers are becoming the norm to go with coffee. This teeth clenching thing is destroying my life and will to live. The pain is starting to spread towards my neck and shoulders now. Next time I have time off I think I'll call my doctor to see if I can get prescribed botox to see if it can help. I heard it can. It's only temporary though. :/ But maybe it will at least give a chance for things to heal.

I just wish there was a way to somehow turn off the nervous system at night so it does not do it in first place. I wonder if sending some constant DC power into the jaw muscles would work. I'm willing to experiment at this point.

I think it's only good for 6 months. But doing it all the time can be bad for the bones as it will start to cause some permanent effects like weakening the bones... But it would give me some temporary relief to do it just once, hopefully.

My hunch is this thing is stuck in a feedback loop, the fact that it's in pain is probably aggravating the clenching, and the clenching is causing further damage which is then causing more pain.

Maybe that will somehow fix the problem permanently then. Though hopefully it does not somehow make it worse... With so many people having this issue I'm surprised there is not more medical advancement to stop it. They keep pushing mouthguards but those don't actually make it stop and you still get TMJ issues.

As a side note they got the voicemail system up and running now without the redundancy, so they just need to repair the side that's down. Still on OT right now. Riding the gravy train.

Also just signed papers for property and gave bank draft to lawyer. Technically official now other than waiting until closing date which is in a week. Quite excited. :D It finally happened.
