Who is going to pay for the fab when mining crashes?

Gamers won't stop gaming, there will still be a need for GPUs and other chip products. The fabs would pay for themselves in a short time while mining is still active. It's not going away any time soon. When it crashes, it recovers. I have to laugh at the people that panic sell when there is a crash. Wait like a year and it will be back up again. Even real mines do this though, price of gold drops and they panic and lay off everyone. Just keep mining, stockpile it, wait a year, it will go back up. But companies and people in general can't seem to grasp the idea of long term planing.

lol we are not talking about harvesting maple syrup, it takes billions and years to setup fab.

So do it. These companies make billions. It's not a big deal. A billion dollars for a large corporation is like $1,000 for us. If you could build something that makes you money and it would be paid off in a short time, wouldn't you want to do it? There is a huge demand for chips right now and not enough supply. GPUs is only a fraction of it. If these companies don't build fabs then unconventional companies like auto manufacturers will. They need chips too.

Fab 15 cost TSMC 9.4B to build...estimate for next gen is 20B.

ASML also cannot build the litho machines faster than demand.

I can't imagine it taking more than a couple years. It's not like this is just people doing this on their spare time. They can dedicate full work days for it.

Chip demand is only going to go higher as more and more things are made electronic now so it makes sense to start working towards building more fabs instead of having an under supply stay as a status quo.

This is going to affect cars once covid is over as well. Right now the auto makers have been able to ride this out since there is not as many sales.

Either that, or more things will just go back to a more analog approach. Especially things like kitchen appliances etc. Not sure how much this shortage is affecting chips like microcontrollers though.

I love how you think eveything can just be ramped up like that.

It's so bizarre that Intel has become AMD. I get that Intel still has market share. But that has little to do with product as it does with AMD's lack of fabs. I can't believe I'm back with AMD. @sdifox got me thinking about using AMD for my server. Then my main rig died. Now, I've gone back with AMD. No Radeon yet. You guys with Radeon?

Layla kitty jumped from the top of the computer to the back of my chair, only she missed. I now have six new scratches and four new punture wounds in my shoulder. :(
