Go with 5x3 (five 3.5" drives in three 5.25" bays) mobile racks. These will accept SAS/SATA drives and are hot swappable. If you use an intelligent raid host bus adapter you just swap the drive when you hear the warning whistle go off! The drive that's misbehaving will have a red light.

That sounds like a rather pricey solution.

I have no idea how much porn is on the server, since the bulk of it is on the MIA drive.

The MIA drive also carries one of the copies of my personal data, and the lose of that bothers me more. Fortunately, I do have a copy of it on another drive.

The personal data needs, oh, a couple weeks of dedicated effort to clean out duplications, unused/unwanted files, old programs, over a hundred thousand screenshots, and so much more. Right now, I have over 300 GB. My guess is, with proper trimming, that'll be under 40, most of it pictures.

I think television deserves its own 2TB drive, but I'm not buying a drive right now, not with the prices of them.

Drive F has returned from the grave.

"Preparing to copy."

850GB from drive to drive via USB.

This is going to take a couple days.

Fuck.

I'm hoping to coax 2.5 years out of my server and primary computer. At that point, I hope to finally be graduating, preferably with a job, and then I'll be looking to move out.

So I'll take everything, sell all of it, and replace it with new upper mid-range hardware, low power server, et cetera.

For data protection, I'll take an approach of someday wiping out tons of old junk, duplicate files, that sort of thing, cutting the total space used, and then swarm - tons of drives.

Copying ongoing, still no time estimate provided. Now been on for about an hour, the colorful bar looks like about 10-15%.
