Minor positive note: I have a drive with 550 free, and another with 650 free, so I have enough space to clear F drive, then send it back to Western Digital.

This will be my third or fourth WD RMA. Not for this same drive, just overall, in the span of 4.5 years.

Server mirrored copies in different locations for redundancy in case there is a problem. We do this here. If I delete something and don't have a (local) backup I can fetch it from the namespace. It takes time but is better than not having it all!

Drive ExH4 (I, 931 available of 931.

This was the drive that used to carry some of my movies maybe? HD stuff? I dunno anymore, but the short of it is, it was spurious, so I bought a 2TB Green, swapped them, shuffled some data, and realized it's actually the motherboard controller that keeps dropping the drive, since there's exactly one drive on that sub controller.

Now it's the new 2TB that bugs out, and I have a spare 1TB. So if I can resurrect this other guy, I can move everything off.

Yeah, I know. And they're all WD Greens, so I can't even RAID them.

I've been triaging for a long time. My personal data that I really couldn't deal with losing is doubled. The bulk of my stuff is movies and television, which, although it would be hard to replace, time consuming, probably expensive, and quite aggravating, it's possible.

That is included on the server, and that goes into the category of stuff I don't really care about. If I lose it, I'll be more pissed about having to deal with replacing a failed drive than the lost data.

HD Movies: 1.3 TB. If I could safely obtain movies again, this would grow at a stunning rate.
SD Movies: 400 GB. This segment will rarely expand again.
Television: 1 TB. If I could safely obtain TV shows again, this would outpace HD movies by far.

Go with 5x3 (five 3.5" drives in three 5.25" bays) mobile racks. These will accept SAS/SATA drives and are hot swappable. If you use an intelligent raid host bus adapter you just swap the drive when you hear the warning whistle go off! The drive that's misbehaving will have a red light.
Recoding movies is a good idea to strip previews, menus, etc. Also BD titles can be compressed to a movie that's about 1/2 the size of a DVD (2GB) and the quality blows away an uncompressed DVD.
