Sharepoint is very similar actually. I think of it more along the lines of an ERP product as opposed to a conventional server product like Exchange or ISA or something like that.

It is a huge product that is increasingly used to tie into Oracle, SAP, etc. for BI purposes. SP 2010 is big for BI currently and increasingly, social networking. It has the standard SP stuff too -- doc management, collaboration, etc. It is also an app platform and you can develop just about anything to run on it.

That's really cool. Waiting for us to move to 2010. Rumors are September... other rumors are 6 months - 1 year.

We wanted ours done by the end of the summer. I haven't even really started. I have too many projects and no help.

Sounds kinda like my past internship. Everyone wanted to upgrade GIS programs but it was one guy who also did support.

Lol that's not going to work.

I'll be lucky to have it done by the end of the year. I've got another SP 2010 migration that has to be done by early October and I still have a ton of projects to do along with idiot requests. I got an email Saturday evening wanting me to do a form for a conference room naming contest and have it ready to show Tuesday. I told them I can't do it since I am out in training all week.

Seriously, it is getting ridiculous when people waste my time with stupid, non-business shit like that.

If it would've been a mission-critical issue, I would've worked on it Saturday night and Sunday even though I was at my wife's parents. But for a conference room naming contest? Fuck that. I know exactly what happens when you bust your ass for someone -- you bust your ass, get the task done, and hand off the finished product and they run and take credit for your work and your payment is getting more work dumped on you. No thanks, and I think I will make it a point from now on to push their tasks to the bottom of my queue.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an "emergency" request. Turns out that the president's mom died and they wanted me to make a form on our intranet for people to express their condolences. Ok, fine, whatever -- even though they wouldn't do that for anyone else in the company. Anyway, I got the basic form framework built in 15 or 20 minutes. I then had to wait over 3 hrs. for them to come up with the wording. Seriously? The ass kissing and personality cult at this place is unlike any I've ever seen anywhere else.

Really, these requests come from the intranet "owner" and I think I am going to have a chat with her and tell her to sign up for InfoPath training because stuff like the work she is giving me is a complete waste of my time.

infopath training in a company where SP is so heavily used seems so major for a intranet "owner"

I think I'll find the course and just email it to her and tell the help desk to install InfoPath on her system. :D She should be capable of doing the basic forms.
