My first build was a push pin Conroe, and I ended up not getting the pins fully locked, so I had a mixture of air and AS5 between core and cooler. 65 C at idle, took me a month to figure it out.

I tried reusing the cooler that was with the E6750 on its old board. I thought I had it secured, but temps were 80 C at idle. I powered it off, removed the old HSF (it clearly was not making contact was very little TIM was on the heat sink from the processor) and installed the stock cooler from my i7 instead and it was then 30 C, meaning I got it mounted properly after damaging the board.

The problem was that I applied downward pressure to the push pin with a flathead and the screwdriver slipped off and gashed the board. There is a noticeable gash over 2 or 3 traces. I thought I was screwed but the box did power up and actually booted to the login screen of an old Windows install on the disk I was using. I thought I was home free but then the box shut off and I haven't been able to get it to power back on. So tonight, I am going to have to test the parts that I can using a semi-functional Abit IP35-E to see what the issue is. I'm pretty sure the board is hosed but I hope nothing else got fried.

What the hell? The only time a screwdriver should be used is to release the push pin after it has been installed. One hand on the HSF, thumb on a pushpin, other hand behind the socket. X pattern for securing the pins.

I can't get them to secure tight enough without a screwdriver. Never had this issue before in the 3 or 4 push pin installs I've done.

Bolt-thru kit? No problem -- it is a 1 minute install of just about any HSF with that. If cheapass Masscool and Thermaltake can include bolt-thru kits with their low-end coolers, everyone should be able to.

They really suck. As a matter-of-fact, I think I've had to reseat every single push pin install I've ever done. The person who came up with that idea instead of just installing backplates and using screws should be shot.

I've only had to reseat once, and that was the first. But I do agree that they suck and their creator should be shot.

I'm baffled by you not being able to force them to lock without a screwdriver though.

Hardmounts are better for water too. They like to give us no backplate solutions (oh thanks, now I get to buy a separate item, with separate shipping, or have my motherboard bow and be destroyed). Then you get the backplate, and it uses springs on screws. If you pull the springs, you have to much screw length, but springs limit your maximum pressure.

At least water doesn't have to suffer through the misery that is push pins. I've only used a few push pin coolers, and now it's pretty much default for me to cut the fan wires and mount a 120mm on top. Temperatures go down several degrees, and it becomes quieter.

indy is confusing screws with pushpins

I've tried pushing the push pins through with my hands. I get them through but they don't seem to be secure. What I should've done is push them through with my thumbs and then rotated with the screw driver. I'm never really certain or comfortable with the installs of those cheap pieces of crap and always worry they're going to pop out.

When I pushed my old E8400 and Rampage board to a new box, I did use a stock HSF but since I already had the backplate installed and this particular HSF has metal legs with good clearance, I cut the POS push pins off and screwed it to the board. MUCH easier.

I can push them through without any problem but they never seem to secure until you rotate the pin, which is what I use the screwdriver for. I should've just pushed the pin through and then rotated it instead of trying to do both at once. :D

C3 teacher won't like my homework. Recognize shapes by their equations. I used logic, elimination, and a few general shape equations to select them. He'll be wanting the equations to dissected carefully. Fuck him, my method is just as valid.

I will admit -- I am an awesome gift giver. I never disappoint and I always listen throughout the year for ideas. :D

Let me see, here are a few of her needs/wants:

--Laptop
--Fancy wind chime
--Ear rings
--Purse (unlikely at this stage, since she just bought one)
--Music gift cards (probably Amazon this year)

I know there is more I am forgetting. I need to think more.
