A new year, a new hue.
2011 kicks off with verve and vigor, thanks to vibrant lipstick-pink honeysuckle. It's the color of the year, according to the Pantone Color Institute, the research branch of Pantone, which sets the trends and color standards for fashion and home décor.
The energetic, feel-good color shows up in everything from dresses and men's ties to wallpaper and sofa pillows. Designers including Cynthia Steffe, Badgley Mischka and Peter Som have incorporated the color into their spring runway shows. The hue also translates into cosmetics, such as Bobbi Brown's limited-edition Pretty Face collection.
Houston designer and Project Runway winner Chloe Dao featured the color in her spring collection, "Me, I Play." More than half of her collection is crafted from a fabric designed with birds fluttering in six shades of pink, including honeysuckle. Dao created a scarf from the pattern for the annual Zeta Tau Alpha Think Pink! luncheon benefiting breast cancer awareness and research.
"When you think of pink, you think of baby showers and little girls," Dao said. "But honeysuckle is definitely more sophisticated and romantic. It's a color that older and younger women can wear. It makes me happy."
Unlike 2010's color of the year, turquoise, which served as an escape (think beach vacation and ocean views), honeysuckle is about energizing us, says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
"In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going, perfect to ward off the blues," she said in Pantone's announcement.
"Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum. The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages."
Eiseman also said the color, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle scent can bring a wave of nostalgia for its association with the carefree days of spring and summer.
And wearing the color can make you look and feel happier, she said.
Honeysuckle pairs well with black, charcoal or other gray. But green tones can add an interesting touch with honeysuckle tights and tops.
Dao said her spring collection, which features dresses, tailored shorts and wide-leg pants, will be available in February in her Lot 8 boutique in Houston and online at www.lot8 online.com.
"It's about having joy in your life," she said. "I think we really need some."

Last semester, Physics II had an 8 AM lecture, attendance taken by IR clicker participation. Total value of 30 points for the whole semester, out of 750, where 375 is passing. Accordingly, my plan for this semester was never waste my time trying to be up for the 8 AM lecture, never worry about not attending it, and just sacrifice the 30 points.

Instead, that lecture is now 10 AM, the system won't let me double-register that time block, so I'll probably end up at the lecture because of nothing else to do on campus for an hour. Except be very very hungry by eating breakfast at 7 AM and no lunch until noon or 1 PM.

Okay, I have a theoretical schedule lined up. It relies on double-registering the time block from 9 to 9:15. Scheduling an 8 until 9:15 AM class is about as fucking stupid as they possibly could be - every other class works as starting on the hour, and ending 10 minutes before the next hour. By doing this, they completely fuck up the 9 AM block too. Cockpouches.

If I can do that though, I'll have... four straight hours on Monday, 9 to 12:50, then 8 to 9:15 on Tuesday (that's it), then five hours on Wednesday, 9 to 1:50. Thursday is the overlap day, 8 to 9:15 and 9 to 9:50. I'll try to leave the preceding class a few minutes early, arrive at the next a few minutes late. It's the best solution I have. Friday is one class at 9 AM to 9:50. That one has a huge likelihood of being skipped for obvious reasons.

The overlap problem is rooted, of course, in the 8 to 9:15 lunacy. The minimal Thursday and single-class Friday are because of fucking Calculus II, MWRF for 50 minutes each day. A nice 8 to 9:50 MW would be wonderful! But NOOOOOOOOOO, we can't do something sensible like that, better to fuck up four days out of the week.

Oh, my final, utterly irrefutable proof of just how epically stupid these people are.

To enroll in Physics II, you must be in the lecture section, which runs MW 10-10:50. You must also be in a laboratory section. One of those is Wednesday from 10-11:50.

The prosecution rests.
