<<UPDATE#2>> My Bum Is Looking Less Baboon-like

I seem to be getting better. Early Friday morning, prior to my doctors appointment, I felt the urge to hit the restroom. And instead of the usual pouring of battery acid, I......ummm, well, to avoid grossing anyone out, let's just say the best way to describe it would be, if you've ever watched an old WWII movie where you see a U-boat firing a torpedo. You know lots and lots of gas, ejecting the torpedo from the tube. A very similar thing happened to me. I actually never felt anything leave my body, but upon looking down, I observed a decent sized floater that was not there when I sat down. w00t!

And I've been solid ever since.

I made it to my doctors appointment totally anticipating a lecture from him on the negatives of Atkins but was surprised to learn that he has been on the diet for the last 6 months. He said that the medical community is actually starting to look positively on the Atkins/low carb diet after years and years of poo-poo'ing it.

My doctor seemed to think that the radical change in my diet coupled with a mild stomach flu that happened to hit about the same time, for the double whammy, 'stop, my ass is on fire', diarrhea. As for the bacon smelling urine, his only guess was that the presence of ketones in my urine is changing the smell. He figured that by day #4 on the diet, the first day I noticed the funny smell, I should have been fully in ketosis. Sure enough, I googled 'atkins urine smell' and found several people talking about the change in urine odor on this diet.

Anyway, he took some blood/urine samples, checked me out, and sent me on my way.

I still feel great, have lost 10pounds in the last week and have been enjoying life away from the toilet. :D

Since you've lost 10 pounds, do you really notice it if you look in the mirror?

In lieu of this thread, no pun intended, right?

I had a physical last week... One of the first things my Dr noticed was my weight drop. When she asked how I'd been doing it, I was preparing for the lecture...

But she had nothing bad to say about the Atkins plan. :)

Actually, yes. I notice it in the pants that used to fit tight and now fit normally. But biggest place I notice it is in my face and neck. Previously if I rotated my head around like it was on a swivel, I would feel a fat roll on the back of my neck and could no way even come close to touching my chin on my chest. I now no longer feel the roll on the back of my neck but I am really close to touching my chin to my chest.

The toughest part of the diet is recognizing that this is the way you have to eat forever. My wife brought home a grande mocha from Starbucks for me yesterday and I had to turn her down. I was quite tempted, but I don't want to ruin what I've started.

All I can say to anyone about to try it is, it's a lot tougher than it looks. But the results are hard to argue with.

I'll post my blood results when I get them. Although I'm not sure I've been on the diet long enough to change them.

Actually, you don't have to eat this way "forever." As you lose weight and gain muscle, your metabolism will change... You'll be able to intake more carbs, and still not gain weight.

But yes... You'll never be able to go back to your old habits, if you want to keep the weight off.

Dumb question.

Why do you need to get a physical/blood results, is it specifically because of the Atkins/low carbs diet?

I did it for a few reasons...
  • It's been 2.5 years since my last physical
  • My wife is very skeptical, so I did it to reassure her that this plan is safe
  • I did it to appease all the naysayers (both here and in my real life)
:)

It's sounds like you are lactose intolerant. Cheese or any dairy products would give you the runs if you are lactose intolerant.

<<UPDATE#3>> Now Pooping Bowling Pins!

That's it. My ass can't take it anymore and I am officially off the Atkins diet.

I've swung so far in the other direction that I practically need a shoe horn to finagle a turd out.

I quit!

I was eating tons of celery, broccolli, cauliflower and drinking well over a gallon of water a day and still no joy.

Try some Fiber One or All Bran cereal if it fits in the allowable carb limit. Psyllium husks are even more hardcore if Fiber One has too many carbs.
