Ive never used it but didnt Blizzard implement an in game voice comm option? Have any of you used it and is it any good? I ask because I dont plan on giving people I PUG with access to my Vent server but I would love to have a way to coordinate with PUG groups in game.
Voice chat built in is still there but the last time I tested it, which honestly was at least a year ago, it was complete shit and not the most straight-forward thing to get set up and going.
As for letting pugs have "access" to your vent, I don't really see that as an issue. Hell, I bet you could give your password out in trade and you still wouldn't be able to get people to use it without your permission. My guild doesn't even keep a password on our vent. If someone uses it without permission, we'll ban their IP and go on with our lives.
My guild is using a new-ish program called Mumble instead of Vent. I dont have much experience with it yet but it seems pretty awesome. It actually projects a list of who is in your channel INTO your wow window. Then their names light up when they talk. I don't know how it does it but its pretty nice.
I tried moving my guild over to Mumble last summer, but we kept having issues every week with one or two people not showing or not being able to make raid night, so trying to get a pug to download and use Mumble was a fucking hassle. I've heard of some servers moving wholesale to Mumble as the preferred voice chat program (i.e. everybody already has it installed and use it regularly), but most servers still use vent (or even teamspeak) as the go-to program.
A friend and I did some testing on Mumble once and found Mumble lag to be immensely better than Vent at the same compression. It wasn't a widespread test or anything, just using what we had, but Mumble was great. I'd suggest using mmo-mumble.com if you need to purchase the hosting, it's a ton cheaper than vent services I've seen.
